CASEY communities are set to join the fight against cancer with the launch of the Casey Cardinia Relay for Life 2008.
The annual fund raising event for The Cancer Council Victoria will be launched on Saturday 1 September at the City of Casey council chambers in Fountain Gate.
Relay for Life coordinator Kelly Fuery said it was a perfect opportunity for the local community to come along and see what Relay For Life is all about.
“Two thousand and eight will be Casey-Cardinia’s fifth Relay for Life and we are calling for teams to register now,” Ms Fuery said.
“The launch is the perfect opportunity for local residents to find out further information in a relaxed environment,” she said.
Narre Warren group Team Jess raised an amazing $76,000 in this year’s event and will again take part in the 2008 relay.
Teams are asked to raise funds throughout the year with the many months of hard work culminating in the 24 hour Relay for Life event.
The Casey-Cardinia Relay for Life event has raised close to $300,000 for cancer research, eduction and support programs in the four years it has operated.
The relay is a 24 hour style walk or run in which teams are challenged to keep their baton moving around the track for the entire 24 hours.
“Relay For Life is unique, it is a 24-hour team event that remembers those lost to cancer and supports cancer survivors and people who are fighting the disease,” Ms Fuery said.
“It’s a memorable 24 hours filled with fun, laughter and the occasional tear. We create a festival atmosphere involving all ages and all sectors of the community, coming together to celebrate life.
“Everyone involved in Relay For Life gets great satisfaction out of knowing that the money raised goes to The Cancer Council Victoria and helps in the fight for a cancer-free future.”
The committee encourages all those who are interested in registering a team, joining the organising committee or simply finding out about Relay for Life to attend.
The afternoon will feature a short presentation followed by morning tea where participants will have the opportunity to meet committee members and discuss their relay experiences. Teams can also register on the day.
The 2008 Relay for Life event will be held at Akoonah Park, Berwick, in February next year.
Registration is $15 per person and includes a Relay For Life branded sun smart polo shirt, team-member’s handbook and fundraising materials.
