Eagles eye drivers- Casey’s Traffic Management Unit launched Operation Eagles today in an effo

POLICE are assembling a strike-force team of the district’s top traffic officers to target Cardinia, Casey and Dandenong as the region continues to top the state’s road toll.
Operation Eagles was launched Today (Thursday) in The City of Casey and will soon extend to the Cardinia Shire and Greater Dandenong.
The ongoing operation was launched after police revealed they caught a hoon travelling at 106 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Hallam Road just hours after a nearby intersection claimed the life of a 21-year-old woman.
Four young people were killed in a separate collision at the intersection of Ormond and Hallam Roads just a week earlier.
And on Sunday 12 July police charged a 25-year-old man with drink driving offences after a single-vehicle collision at the same intersection.
Region 5 Division 2 Superintendent Shane Patton said police were baffled by motorists’ behaviour despite the obvious safety risks and media coverage of the two fatal collisions at the Lynbrook intersection last week.
“A split second of unlawful driving can cause a lifetime of tragedy for families and friends,” he said.
“Despite front page stories with pictures of mangled cars and grieving families some motorists continue to believe it won’t happen to them.
“But I’m sure the families of those five young people will attest that it certainly does happen to you and when it does it is absolutely devastating.”
Region Five, which covers Victoria’s south-east, tops the state’s road toll with 48 fatal collisions so far this year. Region 1, which covers Melbourne, has seen just seven.
