PAKENHAM Oaks Day is fast becoming one of the biggest events on the country racing calendar.
A record crowd of 3899 flocked to the Pakenham Racing Club’s third annual ladies day, while the Fashions on the Field competition attracted a large number of contestants.
Patrons sipped champagne on the lawn and cheered loudly for their horses of choice, while those in the Indulgence Marquee did what the tent’s namesake implied.
Fashions on the Field Most Elegant Lady winner Vasfie Besim, who travelled from Chadstone to compete, said she thoroughly enjoyed the race meet.
“There are so many friendly people,” she said.
Pakenham Racing Club manager Michael Hodge predicted the event could even attract bigger crowds in the future.
“Each year it grows significantly and there’s huge potential for it to grow even more,” he said.
Pakenham Racing sales and events coordinator Michelle Tones said many locals, and people further a field, who traditionally went to Flemington for Oaks Day were now opting for the country event.
“They (the crowd) tell us it’s a cheaper option, more accessible and they can get a seat as well,” she said.
Star News Group photographers Luke Plummer and Stewart Chambers captured all the action at the Pakenham Oaks, including activity in the Indulgence Marquee and during the Fashions on the Field competition.
