The Garfield Open Tournament kicked off on Wednesday with a 4BBB Stableford event and was attended by a disappointing field of 18 pairs in total for both the men’s and ladies’ events.

It was that man again, Paul Govaars, winning his fourth major event by teaming up with Matt Allen to win the men’s event with an excellent round of 47 points, one shot in advance of Steve Clark and Geoff Sinclair.

In the last month Govaars has won the A Grade event at the Lifestyle Community Day as well as teaming up with Jeanette Mitchell to win the Anniversary Day/Colliver Trophy whilst also winning the clubs Foursomes event with Grant McLure.

Very well played to you Paul.

Geraldine Sinclair teamed up with Bernie Clark to win the ladies fourball on a countback from Marg Andrews and Kay Jones with a final score of 44 points.

As per usual there was a progressive nearest the pin in play on the 9th hole and after day one it was Hank Adams the clubhouse leader with a distance of 3.6 metres.

The next day, Thursday, was a single stableford event for both the gents and ladies with 89 men in attendance and just eight ladies turning out.

Darren Stanton won the A Grade event with a good score of 40 points whilst John Daly won the B Grade event with a signed for card of 38 points.

John Jenkins had the day’s best score of 41 points to win the C Grade event and a final score of 33 points was the number required to finish in the money which was achieved by some 18 players.

A total of just 13 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with Glen Ward and Jason McLean getting a pair of those.

The ladies’ event was taken out by Garfield’s winning machine Karli Van Der Horst with a handicap round of 36 points whilst also scoring a pair of nearest the pins and the one birdie converted.

Carol Beard, a lady in good touch, also scored a pair of nearest the pins for her round.

On Saturday a field of 126 golfers presented for the coveted title of Open Champion with Clint Williams getting the job done for the A Grade event on a countback from Morwell’s Tom Couling with a round of nett 67.

Couling took out the title, as he played off scratch, whilst Williams had a mark of three.
