Scarborough hits the Jack-pot

The weather in the middle stages of Autumn was up and down last week as golfers copped with all sorts of conditions at Deep Creek Golf Club.

But despite the inclement weather, the course played magnificently, with the fairways in mint condition allowing some great golf to be played.

The best golf of the week came from junior member Jack Scarborough (18), who scored 41 points top claim a comfortable victory in Saturday’s B Grade stableford event.

Runner up in B Grade was Patrick Farrell (21) with 37 points, while in A Grade it was Anthony Franzi (12) who captured the main prize with 38 points.

Lyriq Bester (15) was runner up in A Grade with 37 points with down the lines going to Blaze Bester 36, Glenn Rees, Gary Clymo and David Leek 34, and to Dean Jones, John Curtin, Scott Irwin and Peter Reilly with 33 points.

Nearest the pins went to 2nd hole: Royce Thompson (1.71m) and 16th hole: Noel Boyd (2.6m).

Conditions were almost best of the week for Monday’s stableford competition with Rob Nobelius claiming top honours in a very tight finish with 37 points.

Hot on Rob’s heels was Ross Maclean – who was runner up on a countback from Brian Webster and Harry Elyasie with 36 points – while down the lines went to Damon Whaley and Bobby Edwards 34, Glenn Rees and Daryl O’Grady 33, and Peter Diss, Colin Maclean and Scott Irwin with 31 points.

Nearest the pin went to Brian Webster (0.99cm) on the 16th.

The usually well-attended Wednesday mid-week competition was heavily affected by rain, but it couldn’t stop Blaze Bester Blaze Bester from continuing his great run of form, scoring 36 points to take out the daily prize.

Midweek club champion Harry Elyasie won nearest the pin on the 16th with his ball resting four metres from the hole.

The Ladies of Deep Creek had a big day on Thursday with the second and final round of the 2023 4BBB Ladies Challenge taking place.

The daily winners were eventual champions Leah Barker and Shirley McGrath, who scored 37 points for a two-shot victory over runners up Marg Andrews and Nola Kerslake on 35 points.

Bev Clymo and Ginny Carter also scored 35 points to win a ball down the line, while nearest the pins went to Leah Barker on both the second (80cm) and 16th (80cm).

The 2023 4BBB Ladies Challenge winners were Leah Barker and Shirley McGrath with a combined total of 79 points.
