GARFIELD GOLF

The travelling Veterans Tour arrived at Garfield on Monday 6 March with a fine field of 102 players lining up for a game of single stableford and was played on a lay out in fantastic order.

A great day was had by all although the scores were somewhat down for this time of the year with the overnight rain perhaps making the course just that little bit heavier.

Garfield players used their local knowledge to the full, featuring prominently in the results.

Richard Perry, Geoff Roberts and Reg Beyer all had totals of 34 points to finish in the money.

A really big thank you to David Rash, captain of the WGVGA, and Leesa and Chris for all their work in the office that made the day run very smoothly and efficiently.

The meal served up at the conclusion was superb…a roast with all the sides, if you don’t mind, which has set a very high standard for the rest of the clubs on tour – but I doubt very much they will match it. Special thanks to Kay and Cam in the kitchen.

Teresa also did a great job filling in where needed with assistant volunteers Tony Mafodda, Trevor Burnie and Charlie Barnes also assisting with collecting the money and entering the cards.

Well done to all for a memorable day.

This week’s spotlight goes on 83-year-old veteran Geoff Roberts whom has put together a great month of consistency by not only winning the B Grade event for the Veterans, but also putting together scores of 36, 39, 40 and yet another 41 points to finish in the money on Thursday.

Well done, Geoffrey.

Saturday was a 27-hole foursomes event with Shane Male pairing up with Matt McCormick to win the scratch event with a great score of 113.

Darren McKerrow and John Wise won the handicap event with a score of 97.50.

A final score of 107 was the number required for a ball down the line.

A field of 66 players came out for Thursday’s game with a very much in-form Ian Nicholson showing the way with a C Grade winning score of 43 points to get the win over Billy Low by one point.

Grant McKay won the A Grade event with a round of 40 points to defeat Richard Perry and Darren Stanton by three points.

Glenn Whelan made it a family double for the week with the B Grade win on Thursday with a score of 40 points whilst Linda Whelan won the Ladies Monthly Medal on Tuesday, her first ever, with a great round of nett 67.

On Thursday a score of 35 points or better, back to a count back, was required to get a ball down the line.

The ladies 27-hole foursome event was also played on Saturday with Leesa Matthews and Georgi Lowndes winning the scratch event with a score of 140 whilst Amanda McLure and Di Norton won the handicap event with a final score of 111.

This Saturday is the playing of the Anniversary Day Coliver Trophy as well as an overflow stableford event.
