‘Finals Day’ fever hits Cardinia Waters

CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

It was the highly anticipated ‘finals day’ at Cardinia Waters Bowls Club last Friday.

After the preliminary rounds were conducted earlier this year, the Mixed Pairs, Minor Championship and 100-Up Handicap finals were held in pleasant Autumn conditions.

Following his Club Championship Men’s Singles title, Ray Naylor again featured in two of these finals. He and his wife Jill won the Mixed Pairs final against Simon Koning and Sandra Wilde.

Then after lunch, Ray was pitted against Dennis Patmore in the 100-Up Handicap Singles.

Even allowing his opponent a reasonable handicap, Ray was too good and won in a competent manner.

Also, that morning on the next rink, Terry Nye and Robert Mitchell played off in the Minor Singles Championship.

This competition is open to bowlers who have not previously won a Club title.

These two, who are good friends and near neighbours in Cardinia Waters, played a very close game. At one stage the scoreboard read 14-14, however it was Robert Mitchell who utilised the mat a little better to dash away in the final few ends, and claim victory.

Ray and Jill Naylor are great players and supporters of Cardinia Waters Bowls Club.

Ray is a committeeman, Tuesday Pennant player, Greens director and Tournament Committee member.

His success on the green comes from being a dedicated player, who practises regularly.

He also proudly prepares and looks after the bowling surface.

Before relocating to Cardinia Waters, Ray and Jill lived at San Remo, where they were respected members of the San Remo Bowls Club.

Whilst at that club, Ray won the Men’s Singles title twice, Men’s pairs twice and the 100-Up once. Ray and Jill were also successful twice in the Mixed pairs.

With our season ending Ray still has important bowls games to play.

This coming weekend Ray represents Cardinia Waters in the Champion of Champions event.

This event sees the winner of all clubs mens and women titles, play off for the Champion of Champions.

At the time of writing the venues haven’t been announced, but are expected on Bowls Victoria website early this week.

Ray is also entered for two events at the Victorian Open which commences on March 24.

Recently moved from Shepparton to Traralgon, the Vic Open as it is called, showcases some of Australia’s finest bowlers, in singles, pairs and triples events.

The Victorian under 18 titles will be run in conjunction with the adult competitions.

The events are conducted over eight days, using many Gippsland venues with all finals being played at the superb Traralgon Bowling Club facility.
