Thompson turns up the heat

A sweltering Friday turned into a sensational Saturday for golfers at Deep Creek Golf Club with the intimidating 40-degree weather a thing of the past as golfers teed up for the major competition of the week.

On a tough day for scoring – with gusty winds taking their toll – it was Royce Thompson (19) who handled the conditions best to be the only player to better his handicap on the day.

Thompson scored 39 points for a comfortable four-shot victory in A Grade, with Murray O’Dwyer (15) scoring 35 points to take home the minor prize.

In B Grade, Stuart Whaley (34) was the winner with 36 points, one shot clear of runner up Liz Garvey (42) on 35 points.

Balls down the lines went to Brian Webster, John McDonald and Roger Parker with 35 points, Glenn Rees, Tia Fetineai and Leigh Cullen 34, and David Leek, Barry Williams and Shirley McGrath with 33 points.

Nearest the pins went to 2nd: Peter Reilly (1.40m) and 16th Tia Fetineai (.68m).

Club stalwart Noel Bonne (14) kicked off his week in impressive style, scoring 39 points in Monday’s stableford competition for a one-shot victory over Stuart MacDonald (24).

Down the lines went to Heath Barclay 37, Stephen Northcott 35, Perter Diss 34, Rod Beard 33, Tony Sheahan 33, Julie Cheng 33, Rob Nobelius 32 and Tom Reid 32, while nearest the pins went to 2nd: Harry Bolotin (3.8m) and 16th: Tony Sheahan (6.4m).

Chris Mc Connell (16) has been in fine form of late and the former gun cricketer continued his impressive form by finishing plus-3 to win Wednesday’s A Grade Par event.

Levi Sua (9) was runner up with plus-2, while Kel Trickey (24) signed off on exactly the same score to win B Grade on a countback from Ross Stewart (21).

Down the lines went to William Carmichael (27) 2up, Trevor McQualter (32) and Daryl O’Grady (27) 1 up, John Kingman (22), Noel Bonne (14) and John Curtin (15) square, and to Bob Naismith (18), Terry Bull (28) and Scott Irwin (12) with scores of minus-1.

The SuperComp Back 9 winner was Levi Sua with plus-3, while nearest the pins went to 2nd Hole: Barry Williams (1.52m) and 16th Hole: Frankie Chiu (1.79m).

The ladies braved the conditions for a nine-hole stableford event on Wednesday with Leanne Barker (24) returning to the winners’ circle with a score of 14 points.

Julie Cheng (26) was runner up with 13 points, on a countback from Leah Barker.

Helen Aurish won nearest the pin on the second hole at 9.5cm.
