DEEP CREEK GOLF

Sweet-swinging lefty Matthew Hogan has had a week to remember at Deep Creek Golf Club after signing off on two winning scorecards in the space of five days.

Hogan scored 37 points to win Monday’s stableford event and then backed that up with a superb score of 43 points to win Saturday’s race for the January Monthly Medal.

Hogan, playing off his handicap of 20, carded the clear best score on Saturday, with his 43 points seven shots clear of his nearest B Grade pursuer in Anthony Kemsley (26).

Shane Franzi (18) also had a great round, scoring 40 points to win the A Grade event by two shots from Leigh Cullen (17) on 38 points.

Down the lines went to Mark Hatton and Bodhi Leguier with handicap-equalling scores of 36 points, while Anthony Franzi, Barry Williams, Wayne Lamers and Robin McCrae picked up a ball each with scores of 35 points.

Sharp-shooters on the par threes on Saturday were Tia Fetineai (40cm) on the second hole and John Hutcheon (2.8m) on the 16th.

Hogan built confidence for Saturday’s spectacular round of golf by firing 37 points to win Monday’s stableford event by one shot from Ron Parsons (25).

Down the lines went to Brian Webster 35, Glenn Rees 34, Harry Elyasie, Brian Bateup and Les Jones 33 and to Anthony Kemsley, Colin Crowle, Nick Gray and Levi Sua all with 32 points.

Nearest the pins went to 2nd hole: David McMahon (4.40m) and 16th: John Curtin (3.85m).

Tight contests were the order of the day for Wednesday’s stableford competition, with both grades being decided by a single stroke.

Levi Sua (11) won A Grade with 38 points, defeating runner up Barry Williams (18) by one point, while Daryl O’Grady (28) scored 41 of the best to edge out Tia Fetineai (21) by the same margin in B Grade.

Down the lines were received graciously by Graeme Steel 40, Alex Green, John Piggott and Kevin Sutton 39, Rex Ryan 36 and Dean Jones, Royce Thompson, John Curtin and Gordon Edwards on 35 points.

The SuperComp Back 9 winner was Alex Green with 23 points, with nearest the pins going to 2nd Hole: Barry Williams (0.85m) and 16th Hole: Kevin Sutton (1.60m).

The ladies stepped out on Thursday to fight it out for the January Monthly Medal and it was exciting young talent Lillian Bu (29) that proved the best ball striker on the day, scoring 36 points to win by two shots from Leah Barker.

Suzanne Van Strien and Delanie Lewis couldn’t be split, with both players earning balls down the line with 33 points.

Van Strien won both nearest the pins on the day, on the second (.88m) and 16th (0.49m) holes.

Marg Andrews won the nine-hole competition with 14 points, with down the line going to Nola Kerslake.

Rounding out a full week at the Deep Creek Golf Club on Friday and Sunday respectively were stableford competitions.
