CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS – ROUND 4

MIDWEEK REPORT

Both midweek sides had good wins in not too easy conditions last week.

Side one travelled to Willow Lodge, and came home with 14 points against the Lodgers.

Willow Lodge is a retirement village on Frankston-Dandenong Road, Dandenong South.

They play on a large undercover eight-rink green which is normally a fair home-ground advantage.

John Van Vugt’s rink was outstanding, winning well by 30 shots up.

John played with his normal crew of Ray Naylor, Tom Gogan and Jill Naylor.

They held their opponents scoreless until the fourteenth end.

Along the way they scored easily, including a six, a five and a four.

The final score was 37-7.

The other rink to win was Bill Hite, Steve Hale, Robert Mitchell and Donny Gibson.

They started slowly, taking some time to find their way on the big green.

After being just behind at lunch, they motored home nicely afterwards, scoring easily including one six and several fours.

Their final scores were 28-14.

Side one is just out of the four, and next week play at home against Dandenong Club.

At home, side two played in atrocious conditions against Edithvale.

The game was delayed by rain showers early with about half an hour of play lost.

Gale force winds made bowling difficult, and both sides were suffering from the cold conditions. Lunch was delayed as the two sides made use of the midday sun.

After lunch it was Cardinia Waters who took up the initiative, powering away to a solid win, successful on all three rinks with a total score of 68-38.

King rink was Len Judge, Dennis Patmore, Gary Bondfield and Paul Brindle who finished the game with a score of 31-9.

This is the same four who last week had a perfect eight score.

Also winning well was Kerry Lewis, Jenny Edmonds, Brian Byrne and Jennifer Cole who won 19-12.

Just sneaking in for a one-shot win was the four of Michele Bondfield, Ian Kennedy, John Moore and Therese Mitchell.

After leading all day, they just survived an Edithvale revival.

This good win saw side two grab top spot on the ladder by just one point, and next week they play away against Dandenong Club.

SATURDAY PENNANT

Cardinia Waters travelled to Cranbourne last Saturday, and had mixed fortunes on the slow Cranbourne grass greens.

They won two of the four rinks; however, both were by the slimmest margin of one shot up.

Overall, they lost the game by 14 shots.

The two winning rinks both had quite handy leads early but slipped back later in the game.

John Van Vugt played with Micki Horton, Kaye Hale and Donny Gibson.

They were in control early and were leading 17-6 after 13 ends, but slipped badly after lunch to just hang on by one shot.

The other winning rink, also by just the one shot, was Stephen Hale, Mick Knight, Marie Stephenson and Graeme Taylor.

In a similar fashion they led early and all but lost the game in the second half.

Cardinia Waters are sitting in fifth place, and next week play Pakenham at home.

Pakenham is sitting top of the ladder undefeated, after their strong win against Berwick this week.
