DEEP CREEK GOLF

What a great week it has been for Australian golf with Cameron Smith taking home one of the world’s greatest trophies after a stunning eight-under-par 64 in the 150th edition of The Open at St Andrews on Sunday.

Most classic sporting moments take a while to grow on people, but Smith’s heroic final round performance is an instantaneous addition to the list of our country’s greatest sporting moments of all time.

The Open…St Andrews…150 Years…it doesn’t get any bigger or better than that!

But Smith wasn’t the only player tearing up golf courses on the weekend with Deep Creek member Patrick Farrell (21) producing a stunning score of +5 to win B Grade in Saturday’s Par event.

Farrell dominated scoring, winning B Grade by a massive seven shots from Andrew Heagney (19) on -2.

Female members of the club dominated the A Grade event with Delanie Lewis (14) finishing +1 to win by a shot from runner up Suzanne Van Strien (10) who finished square.

Down the lines went to Murray O’Dwyer (square), Brett Nowlan and Rob Nobelius -2, and to Noel Boyd, David Leek, Craig Clissold, Rob McCrae, Dean Jones and Michael Anlanger who all finished -3.

Nearest the pin on the second hole went to John Hutcheon (1.10m).

Long before Smith hoisted the Claret Jug, Glenn Charles (26) was winning last Monday’s stableford event with a fine score of 38 points.

Runner up Rex Ryan (19) signed off on a score of 35 points, while down the lines went to Phillip Mott 35, Tony Vallance 34, Noel Bonne 33, Bobby Edwards 32 and to Terry Bull, William Carmichael, Noel Boyd, David McMahon and Harry Elyasie on 31 points.

Nearest the pins went to: 2nd Hole: Roger Parker (7.30m) and 16th: Bobby Edwards (4.13m).

The July Mid-Week Monthly Medal went up for grabs on Wednesday with John Curtin the eventual winner.

Curtin (18) had a convincing win in B Grade scoring 38 points for a five-shot win over Stephen Northcott on 33.

Chris McConnell (14) won A Grade with a score of 34 points, one clear of Neville Taylor (17) on 33 points.

Down the lines went to Roger Parker, Tom McDermott and Daryl O’Grady with 31 points and to Rob Nobelius, Mick Boyd, Stewart Mac Donald and Rex Ryan with 30 points.

The SuperComp Front 9 winner was Neville Taylor with 19 points on a countback.

Nearest the pins went to 2nd: Harry Elyasie (0.7m) and 16th: Tim Pratt (1.88m).

Leah Barker (24) won the ladies competition in very tough conditions on Thursday, scoring 27 points for a one-shot victory over Carol Beard.

Leah also won both nearest the pins on the day on the second and 16th holes.

And ‘Sunday Specialist’ Nick Gray (5) rounded out the golfing week with a score of 33 points to win the stableford event by two shots from Leon Mateariki.
