WASHED out one week, wiped out the next would pretty much sum up the Cranbourne Bowling Club’s last two weeks of Saturday pennant competition.
Round 10 proved to be a disaster on Saturday as all six sides suffered defeat in a very disappointing day for the club.
The top side hosted Mordialloc on a free-running 14-second green in benign conditions. The Mordialloc side handled the quick green much better than the locals and had a 15-shot lead at the afternoon break.
Cranny fought back immediately after the break picking up numbers on three rinks, but was unable to sustain the momentum and fell away over the last ends, eventually losing on three of four rinks.
This loss sees the top Cranbourne side tumble from fourth spot on the division ladder into the dreaded relegation zone.
The second side played away against the South Oakleigh club on its slick synthetic green. While it played well, the Cranbourne side couldn’t match its opponents’ home-green advantage, which was running at an estimated slick 19 seconds in the last half of the game. The third side played at home against a very strong Clayton side, winning on two rinks, but going down overall by some five shots in a close finish.
A very slow green, timed at 11 seconds, greeted the fourth side at their visit to Coatesville. Unfortunately the Cranny boys struggled to cope with the unusually slow conditions and were beaten on three of four rinks.
