THE Department of Sustainability and Environment has called for information to help explain why a boa constrictor was found sunning itself in a Berwick driveway last weekend.
A resident of Insignia Crescent in Berwick was reversing his car out of the driveway when he heard a scraping noise. He got out of the car and to his surprise found that the problem was a two-metre boa constrictor wedged under the wheel.
A licensed snake catcher was then called to capture the snake, which is illegal in Australia.
DSE officers have conducted an investigation this week to try and identify the owner but were still seeking information from the public.
DSE senior investigator Keith Larner said this was the fourth boa constrictor found at large in Melbourne during the past two years.
“This is alarming and raises serious concerns about how many boas are being held in illegal collections,” he said.
A DSE spokesperson said that unfortunately, because of the disease risk to native pythons, the boa would have to be put down.
Anyone with information on the boa constrictor or other exotic reptiles should contact the DSE Customer Service Centre on 136 186. Information will be treated in the strictest confidence.
