Police forums aim at safer roads

ROAD safety forums will become a new police weapon in a bid to cut the state’s road toll.
The move comes after Victoria Police launched a new road policing strategy last week to help curb crime and preventable injuries.
The Victoria Police Road Policing Strategy will change the way in which the roads are policed and will shift road policing responsibility from the Traffic and Transport Services Department to regional command, restructure traffic management resources and begin road safety forums.
Police assistant commissioner for the region that incorporates Casey, Paul Evans, said the strategy was about best practice in road policing.
He said regions would choose the ways in which the forums would operate, however they would rely heavily on strong police and community partnerships with other dedicated road safety organisations, local councils and residents taking part to achieve better outcomes for road users.
“We want to work with the people in our areas to learn what they think will work to change unsafe driver behaviour and make the roads a safer place for all,” he said.
