OAP lay dead for five weeks

AN elderly woman lay dead in her Eumemmerring home for five weeks before police discovered her body on Saturday.
Acting Sergeant Graeme Stanley, of Endeavour Hills police, said the 66-year-old woman had been found dead in her Brougham Close home shortly after 12.30pm.
Sgt Stanley said neighbours had noticed a strange odour coming from the house three weeks ago but had not alerted police.
He said the woman’s estranged son had gone to visit his mother on Saturday morning.
But when there was no answer at the door, he called the police.
Sgt Stanley said the woman appeared to have died of natural causes and there were no suspicious circumstances.
He said the finding was a reminder to the community that people needed to be more aware of elderly or frail neighbours.
“People should try and keep an eye out for neighbours who are slightly ill or not in the best health,” he said.
Sgt Stanley said neighbours had offered to collect the 66-year-old’s garbage bins and provide other assistance to her about 12 months ago, but this offer had been declined.
The News contacted the woman’s son, who did not want to speak about his mother’s death.
