THE glamour stakes will be high next month when 20 women line up for the 2006 Berwick Grand Prix Grid Girl Competition.
Hosted by the Berwick Chamber of Commerce, the gala event will be held on Tuesday, 14 March at the Central Star Auto Haus Mercedes Benz Showroom, proudly sponsored by the Star News Group, which publishes the News.
Lauren Kok, a 2005 Grid Girl entrant, is organising the event, which will raise funds for the chamber’s 2007 Grand Prix Festival and the St John of God Hospital in Berwick.
Ms Kok urged young women to enter the competition and said many great prizes were up for grabs.
Guests will be hosted by the 20 Grid Girl finalists and will have the privilege of picking the winner, who will go on to represent Berwick in the Australian Grand Prix Search for a Grid Girl competition.
Star News Group was this week named as a leading sponsor.
Managing director Paul Thomas said the company, formerly known as South East Newspapers, had a long association with the Berwick Chamber of Commerce and was happy to be involved in such an exciting event.
Ms Kok said Sundaze Tanning in Berwick was providing each of the 20 finalists with a free spray tan, as well as doing each girl’s make-up before the gala event.
The winner will also receive a Nokia phone and Beach Pack from Cell to Cell communications, and, together with the second and third placed entrants, will receive a range of other prizes worth thousands of dollars.
Former champion racing car driver Allan Moffatt will be guest speaker at the gala evening and Ms Kok said many local businesses were supporting the event.
The 23-year-old marketing student said the competition would provide entrants with the opportunity to meet new people and gain exposure.
“It is good for confidence and it helps you meet new people,” she said.
“Some of the girls might wish to do some modelling or promotional work in the future so this may be a good stepping stone for them.
“Last year was good fun and this year things are a bit more finetuned and we have more sponsors on board.
“The event is good for the chamber and will help promote businesses in the area,” Ms Kok said.
The gala evening will also include a fundraising auction with the chance to bid for a range of unique and interesting motor racing and other sports memorabilia.
The competition is open to women 18 years and over.
Entry forms are available from Judd Real Estate at 30 High Street, Berwick, or by calling Des Wynne on 0417 036 669.
Entries close on Monday, 27 February.
