BERWICK’s Monash University has formed a new welfare committee to better promote its student services.
Last Thursday, the new committee was officially launched with three students taking up the positions of women’s, queer and environmental officers.
Student welfare officer Keegan Street, of Monash Union of Berwick Students, said the students were very enthusiastic about their new roles.
He said the environment officer was already holding weekly meetings and was trying to promote environmentally friendly activities within the university, such as paper recycling and encouraging students to cycle to class instead of driving.
Mr Street said the women’s officer was also keen to run lots of events to bring female students together and help them become more involved in university life.
He said the university was also in the process of organising a men’s officer who will help address issues affecting male students on campus, while promoting available student services.
Mr Street said the queer officer was organising a gay awareness day to promote more understanding and acceptance within the university campus and to help highlight the issues facing gay students.
“Previously the welfare officer took care of all these positions,” Mr Street said.
“Having separate people for each role means people can address the different issues more effectively.”
Mr Street said the officers would still come together and work as a team.
