BERWICK Lodge Primary School youngsters were over the moon after their performance in the Wakakirri National Storytelling Festival heats at Frankston this month.
The Grade three and four students were awarded gold for their story Planet Earth SOS, won silver for their performance and won silver for their performance overall.
The school also received an award for artistic endeavour and the Recycling Award for their re-use of materials for props and costumes.
Teacher Vanessa Porter said the children’ story explored the plight of the environment and how people could get enough water to survive in the future.
“The theme of this year’s Wakakirri festival is Discovery coupled with Wakakirri’s continued focus on creating a sustainable environment through recycling materials,” Ms Porter said.
“The children showed considerable awareness about the environmental issues the earth is now facing, particularly droughts, and thought that in the future, space travel could be a real way to solve the problem.
“They were also keen to re-use existing costumes and as much material as possible in creating their props,” she said.
Fellow performing arts teacher Stephanie Davey said the students perfected their performance in record time.
“They worked together extremely well, especially for a large group, and had the performance ready in just two weeks,” Ms Davey said.
“We are very proud of them all.”
