A BEAUTY therapy student from Berwick’s Chisholm Institute of TAFE has won gold following a spectacular makeover of the National Work Skills Competition.
Sophie Seehussen, who has almost completed an Advanced Diploma of Beauty Therapy, out-manicured hundreds of competitors in the beauty-care category to take the national title in a prestigious vocational skills competition.
Already the Melbourne regional World Skills Competition winner, Ms Seehussen, of Seaford, took part in the three-day competition that tested her skills in advanced facials, manicures, photographic makeup, day makeup, pedicures, hair removal, nails and nail art.
Ms Seehussen said she was surprised and shocked to discover she’d won the gold medal.
“It’s really hard to judge yourself against others in this particular category,” she said.
“You just have to remember what you’ve been taught in class and in the workplace and pretend that noone is watching you.
“Even if I hadn’t won the gold medal it still would be an amazing experience. As our teachers say, it is an opportunity to have your skills critically assessed by someone else and to learn about how you fit into the industry,” she said.
