STUDENTS Russell Guinane of Berwick and Kate Gibbens of Pakenham were quick to take up the chance to meet Prime Minister John Howard when he came to Berwick on Thursday 1 November.
Mr Howard shook hands with both and asked them about their studies.
Both said they hoped to go to university next year.
Kate said she planned to be a teacher and Mr Howard commended the idea.
“We need more teachers,” he said.
Russell said that no one knew the Prime Minister was coming to town, but they were keen to meet him when they saw him in the street.
“It is nice to meet and speak with the Prime Minister,” he said.
“He wished us good luck with our schooling and I believe he was excited about Kate wanting to be a teacher,” Russell said.
“He asked who I would vote for and I said I would vote for him because of his economic record. I meant that.”
Russell said he planned to study for a business degree but said he still had to get into university next year.
“I am really confident I will get in because I have been working really hard.
“One problem, these days, is that the enter score is too high for people who need to go in on HEX.
“People who can pay for their course can get in easier,” he said.
