GARFIELD GOLF
It was a hot, humid and stormy week just gone with plenty of rain falling at the end of the week at Garfield Golf Club.
There was plenty of golf this week with huge fields presenting for the Veterans Day on Monday, the same for Thursday, and similar for the final round of the 2023 Club Championships on Saturday.
Chris Thorn, playing off his mark of plus-six, if you don’t mind umpire, was crowned Club Champion with a three-round total of 208… four shots clear of the next best in Tym Davey.
The B Grade Champion was Leon Mateariki with a total of 234, three shots to the better of a fast-finishing Ian Hopper.
John Hoare took out the C Grade title with a total of 257, with a huge 10-shot margin back to Hank Adams in the runners up stall.
Hoare made it a double winning the Veterans category with a total of 203, just one stroke to the better of Ian Hopper.
Hopper stormed home with an A Grade win on Saturday, shooting 76 – nett 66 – to win by a countback from the irrepressible and previous club champion in Shane Male.
For all the Championship results please read below.
Steve Wallace was the star on Saturday with a very impressive 77 off the stick – nett 62 – to get the B Grade win by six shots from Bob Collins and John Hoare.
Damien Martini won the C Grade event with a round of nett 65, two shots better than Steve Bloomfield and Hank Adams.
Steve Clark got the D Grade decision, also with a score of nett 65, five shots better than the next best in Daniel Schimdt.
A final score of nett 73 was the number to finish in the money.
Just the 17 players, not many, were able to play to or better their handicap for the day.
A total of 10 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with Chris Thorn getting a pair of those.
On Thursday, another good field of 95 punters lined up for play with a red-hot Ian Hopper to the fore once again winning the A Grade event on a countback from Paul Kaye with a round of 39 points.
Michael Carrigan won the B Grade event, also via a countback decision from Jason Hoghton with a score of 40 points.
Stephen Eddy saluted for the C Graders with the day’s best score of 42 points; two points clear of Jill Gay.
A final score of 35 points back to a countback was required to finish in the money which was achieved by some 17 players.
Both Chris Thorn and Harry Matthews scored eagles on the par five first.
The week’s other star performance came from John Hurford, a visitor from Yallourn, who clocked up an impressive score of 44 points to get the B Grade win for the Veteran’s event played last Monday.
The event attracted yet another good-sized field of 104 players.
A very good day was had by all that played in this event which was Pakenham’s rescheduled event.
A big thank you to Leesa and Chris for the work that you both did in organising and collating.
It made our job very easy; and thank you also to the kitchen staff for providing an excellent meal which was very well received.
The unlucky Steve O’Loughlin had 40 points and got a ball for his effort.
The next event is the annual ‘Christmas Bash’ to be held at Warragul on 11 December which is a 4BBB event at the cost of $30 per player.
Names to John Scale by the 7 December, who will be in the clubhouse early next year for annual member payment.
Finally, a big thank you to our wonderful ground staff and club house staff for making the 2023 Club Championships such a memorable event.
