Tyler set to stay

By Callan Date
CITY of Casey CEO Mike Tyler is set to retain his job.
Negotiations will soon start to reappoint Mr Tyler after a majority of councillors voted to do so towards the end of an epic six hour council meeting on Tuesday night.
Controversy has been brewing around the top job since April when council decided to invite applications for the CEO position.
Several decisions surrounding the CEO job have since followed with councillors, as recent as last week, starting to interview recruitment consultants to help oversee the selection process.
But the latest instalment will result in the abandonment of this process and starting negotiations to reappoint Mr Tyler.
Debate was held in camera, with council specifically resolving to make the decision public.
Mr Tyler, who has remained calm and tight-lipped throughout the ongoing situation, would not weigh in on his job controversy when quizzed by the News last week.
He did, however, say that he was exercising regularly in a bid to cope with the distraction of having his future played out in the media and among councillors.
Mr Tyler has been CEO for more than 12 years after being appointed in March 1995.
Casey mayor Colin Butler said council’s resolution would overcome much of the uncertainty and disappointment expressed to him in recent times by staff, members of the business community and residents.
“I am sure that the negotiations will be satisfactorily resolved in the not too distant future, and council would then be in a position to enter into a new contract with Mike to continue as CEO of the City of Casey,” Cr Butler said.
However, not all councillors were happy with the decision to reappoint Mr Tyler.
Cr Paul Richardson said council had done a complete back flip.
“The mayor (Cr Colin Butler) should be removed completely from his position. He is a disappointment and disgrace to the City of Casey and so are the other six councillors who supported it.”
Cr Michael Farley said a recission motion had been lodged and would be heard at the next council meeting.
