PUMAS ROAR INTO GRAND FINAL WITH DOMINANT MUST-WIN PERFORMANCE
Pakenham Pumas have produced a spectacular and commanding 17-5 victory over Melbourne to punch their ticket to the State 4 East grand final.
The stakes could not have been higher on Sunday, and with the season on the line the Pumas wasted no time setting the tone at Surrey Park Arthur Field.
In a blistering opening inning, Jason Rossitt electrified the crowd with a towering triple that drove in two runs, immediately putting Pakenham on the front foot.
The momentum continued moments later as Andrew Hemmes and Andrew Mayberry each delivered clutch singles to bring home another pair of runs, giving the visitors a dream beginning.
Melbourne briefly sparked hope for their supporters in the bottom of the first with an exciting inside-the-park home run that brought in two runs, but the Pumas quickly steadied and resumed control. Pakenham’s relentless offense continued in the second inning.
Travis “Huffy” Hough wore a pitch to get on base, Scott Dale followed with a patient walk, and Rossitt again made his presence felt by grounding into a fielder’s choice that brought another run across the plate.
The Pumas’ lead continued to grow as their lineup refused to ease the pressure.
By the third inning, the visitors had well and truly found their rhythm.
Jacob Gruis blasted a double, Dylan Eldridge added a single, and a Melbourne error allowed the Pumas to stretch the lead even further as their dugout erupted with energy.
The knockout blow came in the fourth inning in a stunning six-run surge.
Hemmes ripped a double to drive in a run before Daniel Kirby delivered a clutch RBI single.
Eldridge drew a bases-loaded walk to force another run home, and Gregg McCormick capped the rally in style with a sacrifice fly that cleared the bases and sent three runners racing home.
On the mound, Andrew Hemmes delivered a strong performance under pressure, giving up just three hits and three runs (two earned) across three and one-third innings while striking out four batters. The Pumas’ offense was relentless throughout the afternoon, piling up an impressive 14 hits.
Rossitt led the charge in the heart of the lineup with three RBIs in a powerful performance, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.
Gruis was flawless, going a perfect 3-for-3, while Mayberry, Hemmes and Kirby each contributed multiple hits to the team’s dominant display.
Pakenham also turned the game into a track meet on the bases, swiping five stolen bases as they applied pressure at every opportunity.
With the must-win clash emphatically secured, the Pakenham Pumas now turns its attention to the biggest stage of all – the grand final – riding a wave of confidence after one of their most complete performances of the season.
The Pumas take on Waverley, at Napier Park Glen Waverley, at 1.30pm this Sunday.
