CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS
Mixed results were the order of the day for the two Cardinia Waters midweek pennant teams with Side One just hanging on to their unbeaten record and Side Two losing at Cheltenham.
At home, Side One scored an amazing one-shot victory over a very unlucky Edithvale team.
Down for all money early at 1-18, and needing a big lift, Cardinia Waters showed the true grit that experience brings to fight back for a memorable one-shot win.
Central to this win was the powerful performance from the rink of John Van Vugt, Kel Smith, Jill Naylor and Bill Hite.
When the chips were down this rink played a strong finish to get the side over the line.
Their score of 28-13 was great, however 15 shots in the last six ends was the killer punch needed for the win.
The final score after 63 ends was 58-57.
Lucky perhaps, but never-the-less side one stays clearly on top and this week faces an away game against Cheltenham.
Side Two had no luck against Cheltenham and could only manage a draw on one rink with Michele Bondfield, Len Judge, Jenny Edmonds and Lorraine Devine being the players involved in that tie.
They still hang on to second spot albeit by just one point, and this week have a home game against Parkdale.
SATURDAY REPORT
There was a most unusual situation for Cardinia Waters Side Two this weekend when three of the four games scheduled to be played were decided by forfeit.
This included the Cardinia Waters v Mordialloc game which was to be played at home.
Earlier in the week Cardinia Waters received an email from the Mordialloc coach offering the forfeiture because they could only muster seven players.
In a 12-player game the minimum number of players for a side to compete is nine.
As all the sides above Cardinia Waters received forfeits the make-up of the four remains unchanged. Glen Waverley first, Berwick second, Cardinia Waters third and Mentone Edge fourth.
This week sees the second round of home and away games start and side two play Mentone Edge at home.
The last game before the Christmas break on December 20 is away to Narre Warren.
Side One travelled to Edithvale for their division four game.
There were familiar faces as many players from both teams also played in the midweek game between these two clubs last Tuesday.
Cardinia Waters showed their dominance of this section with a thumping 32-shot victory.
They were in control all day and at afternoon tea held a comfortable 21-shot lead.
Best rink today was skipped by Ray Naylor.
They won 29-9 and this would have had a higher margin bar for dropping a four on the last end.
Their dominance was shown by the fact that they only lost five ends.
Ray played with John Moore, Jill Naylor and Ron Seamer.
Also winning well was the rink of John Van Vugt, Kel Smith, Robert Mitchell and Dennis Patmore; saluting 26-16.
After scoring a five on the third end and a seven on the fourth they were never troubled to win convincingly.
Keith Lewis’s rink was bolstered by one end of six after dropping an end by the same amount.
They then steadied to hold out their opponents and win 23-18.
He played with Cathy Swinkels, Kerry Lewis and Bill Hite.
With seven rounds now completed Cardinia Waters are undefeated on top of the ladder, and this week face second placed Mulgrave Country Club away.
THURSDAY NIGHT TRIPLES
Despite the top two teams being defeated and the third placed playing a draw the ladder has not changed much.
Team Birnie still holds top spot from teams Lewis, Moore and Smith.
