Warriors continue to roll on in Country Basketball League

A double-header of fixtures turned into a double-header of victories for the Pakenham Warriors Country Basketball League (CBL) Men in round seven.

Pakenham remains undefeated at 7-0 with smashings of both Bairnsdale on Saturday and Korumburra on Sunday.

The Warriors fed into their usual philosophy against the Bullets on Saturday at home, with suffocating defence and unselfish offence.

Six Pakenham players scored in double figures, led by Cal McNiff’s 18 points, and the Warriors cruised to a 118-48 victory.

It was a similar story away against the Wildcats the following day, with Braden Venning’s side outscoring the hosts by double figures in every term to run away with a resounding 108-52 result.

McNiff once again led all scorers with 17, bringing his streak up to five straight games as Pakenham’s leading scorer.

Notably, rising under-16s star Nathan Zanelli reached 11 points in an encouraging display from the youngster.

The women were back in action, also securing an imposing 117-28 drubbing of Bairnsdale on Saturday.

The Warriors held the Bullets to single-figure scoring in every quarter while scoring 28-plus themselves, running up the margin in the triumph.

Newly-signed Big V Warrior Rhiannon Gallagher dominated, outscoring Bairnsdale herself with 34 points.

Tyla Scorah was also busy with a season-best effort of 21 points.

However, on Sunday the offence did not come close to repeating the production of the night before as Pakenham was held off by Korumburra 69-55.

After being overrun 28-16 in the first, a poor second saw the Warriors add just six points and head into halftime in a 46-22 deficit.

A third quarter rally had Pakenham pull within 12, but the Wildcats executed well in the last to keep the Warriors at arm’s length.

Chelsea Schreuder scored 19 points in defeat, while Gallagher provided 13.

Both Pakenham outfits will trek down to Rosebud to face Southern Peninsula on Saturday night, while the men have a home matchup with Lakes Entrance on Sunday in round eight.
