Great mates share the glory

GARFIELD GOLF

There’s plenty to catch up on after a big couple of weeks at Garfield Golf Club with best friends Peter King and Terry McLaughlin stealing the spotlight back on Thursday August 21.

After many years of golfing together, both King and McLaughlin shared the rare joy of scoring their first-ever hole in ones on the same day.

King aced the 16th whilst McLaughlin did likewise on the ninth, and to make the day even sweeter King won the day’s B Grade event with his 82/nett 65.

Just two days later, on Saturday 23 August, Garfield Golf Club held its AGM.

After a six-year term, Amanda McLure stepped down as Club Captain with Robert Harley taking up the position.

Well done Amanda for your tireless work and energy, we both applaud and thank you, and we’re all very happy that you will continue to serve the club by taking a position on the general committee.

On the weather front, the rainfall total for August came in at 46mm which compares to 33mm for 2024 and 55mm for 2023.

Saturday September 6 was Monthly Medal Day with a field of 143 taking part in perfect sunny conditions.

Best in for the day and getting the win was Matt Allen with a great round of 76/nett 66.

Steve Kohut Jnr also had a top round winning the A Grade scratch with his 75, whilst Glen Attwood won the B Grade scratch with his 83 via a countback decision.

Brian Webster took out the best scratch for the C Grade field with his 86 and Robert Murphy was the best in for the D Graders by a countback with his score of 90.

Other good rounds were achieved by Chris Davies, already a monthly medal winner this year, with a round of 78/nett 69, Harry Matthews with a round of 76/nett 71 and new captain Robert Harley with his score of 80/nett 71.

A final score of nett 75 to a countback was the number to get into the run down.

A total of just 11 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with the temporary 19th giving up the four of those.

Thursday’s event, single par, was played in very tough conditions with a howling westerly wind blowing through the day and was contested by a field of 83.

So, it proved to be with just six players up to the task of playing to their mark.

Best in for the day and getting the A Grade win was Ron Seamer with an excellent score of +2.

Yours truly, Terry Webster, tasted success, at last, by winning the B Grade event with a final square round by a countback from a red-hot Daryl O’Grady.

Evan Williams matched his handicap, also finishing square with the card and also Darren Grayson and Colin Crowle.

A final total of -3 to a countback was more than good enough to feature in the prize pool.

Players are reminded that when measuring and marking nearest the pins that the end result needs to be witnessed to be official, which wasn’t the case on the 16th on Thursday.

Just seven birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with the 11th and 16th giving up the three each of those.

A field of 68 contested Monday’s stableford event with the consistent Trevor Thompson winning the A Grade event with his 37 points by a countback from the red-hot Terry McLaughlin and a new member in Terry Tisdale winning the B Grade event, also with 37 points.

A final countback round of 33 points was the number to get into the run down.

This Thursday is the first round of the 54-hole midweek championship where John Coutt is the defending champion.

Saturday is a game of single stableford.
