Medal win down to the wire

GARFIELD GOLF

Golfers were treated to a brilliant week of weather at Garfield Golf Club with clear sunny skies and not a breath of wind to contend with making conditions ideal for great scoring.

Saturday was the August Monthly Medal with a field of 137 turning out in the ideal conditions.

Scoring again proved to be the challenge with just four players up to their mark or better for the day. Best in and winning the medal was Peter Korteman with a round of 89/nett 67, one shot in advance of the unlucky Ray James who shot 76/nett 68 and Matt Dixon on the same score.

Chris Davies, a recent medal winner, also had a great round finishing with 78/nett 69.

A final score of nett 74 was the number needed to finish in the money.

Chris Thorn won the A Grade scratch with his 72 while Anton Varadi took out the B Grade scratch with 84 on a countback.

Jim Accettura won the C Grade scratch also by a countback with a total of 88 and Korteman the D Grade scratch with his 89.

Other good rounds were achieved by Darren Grayson with 78/nett 71, Steve Kohut Jnr 78/nett 71, Steely Mateariki 79/nett 72 and Clint Williams with a very nice 75/nett 72.

Just seven birdies were scored for the day on the par threes.

On Thursday a field of 106 presented for the day’s play of stableford with Mark Blackwood, a visitor from Lang Lang, being clearly the best in for the day winning the B Grade event with a brilliant 80/nett 43 points.

He finished three clear of Russell Kerr who also posted an impressive round of 40 points.

Dylan Skinner took out the A Grade event also with a nice round of 78/nett 39 points; two points in front of Scott Squires.

Life Member Gary Kelly won the C Grade event with his handicap round of 36 points, while the rundown went to all those with 32 points or better.

Matt Silk, a visitor from Yallourn, had a great round of 70/nett 35 points, while Jason Hoghton scored a pair of birdies on the par threes.

On Monday Graeme Coates was best in for the day with his total of 39 points; four points in advance of Trevor Guille and Darren Grayson.

A score of 32 points was good enough to finish in the money.

This Thursday is a game of single par while Saturday is stableford.
