Goon Vets go back-to-back

The ‘invincible’ tag still sits comfortably on the shoulders of a dominant Nar Nar Goon veteran’s team after the Goon made it back-to-back premierships at the Bass Recreation Reserve on Sunday.

Celebration corks were popping by half-time in the 2025 West Gippsland Football Netball Competition (WGFNC) Over 35’s decider; the Goon leading 37-0 at the main break on its way to a 5.12(42) to 2.0(12) success over Garfield.

Two goals to Jared Goldsack, and singles to Daniel Galante, playing-coach Ben Scanlon and Lucas Thomas were the main highlights for the Goon, who maintained its unbeaten record over the last two years.

The Goon has now won 16 games straight, including two grand finals, with an average-winning margin of 69 points.

The closest anyone has got to the Goon was the 2024 semi-final, where Phillip Island pushed them to 23 points.

Danny Wells was the standout player for the Goon, winning the WGFNC Grand Final medal for his hard-running game through the midfield.

Four members of the team; Chris Adams, Kevin Quinn, Shannon Stocco and Scanlon, have now added back-to-back veteran’s premierships to their 2010 senior premiership at the club.

Despite the loss, Garfield can hold its head high after the making the grand final in its first season in the competition.

The Stars also kept the Goon to its lowest score in its 16-game winning streak.

Attention now turns to the Nar Nar Goon senior team, currently a short-priced favourite to take out the WGFNC grand final on Saturday September 20.

The Goon seniors are also chasing back-to-back flags, currently riding high on a 21-game winning streak.
