GARFIELD GOLF
The recently completed major club event the 2025 Cox Cup was taken out by Sam Collins with a 36-hole winning score of nett 136; two shots to the better of Daniel Makepeace and a further shot away in third place was Matt Davey.
Thursday’s golfers got the best of this week’s weather where after a typical cold start the day turned out just nice for a round where a turnout of 96 players took part.
Best in for the day and winning the C Grade event by a countback was Peter Korteman nudging out a red-hot Jeremy Payne – a new member whom has quickly established himself as an in-form player. Russell Kerr won the B Grade event also by a countback from an in-form veteran Peter Johnson with a handicap round of 36 points.
The A Grade event, also decided by a countback, was taken out by Andrew Rose from Harry Matthews and Marcus Crossley all with scores of 35 points.
A countback score of 32 points was the number to finish in the prizemoney.
The forecast heavy rain for Saturday never arrived and the day remained dry for a four-ball aggregate stableford event which was contested by a field of 57 pairs.
Colin Crowle teamed up with Brian Webster for a winning total of 74 points; three points in advance of Martin Dinsdale and Andrew Harry whilst Tony Quinn paired with Darren Manley to finish third by a countback from Heath Lyon and Robert Toth on 69 points.
A final combined score of 63 points or better got you into the rundown of prizemoney, while Martin Spurway scored an eagle three on the par-five first hole.
The event of single stableford saw Darren Manley’s four-ball individual score of 41 points be the winning number defeating Darren McKerrow, who finished second by a countback from Kerrie Davey and Martin Atkins all with scores of 40 points.
Clint Williams had the best scratch round with his 71/nett 38 points.
Liam Hill, a new name, scored 77/nett 37 points, while a regular in this column, Steely Mateariki, had a fine round of 76/ nett 37 points.
Monday was a game of single par where a field of 71, a good number for early in the week, took part with a total of seven players up to the challenge of bettering or equaling their handicap for the day.
Best in was Bob Collins winning the B Grade event with a very nice total of +5, while Bob Edwards broke a run of outs to win the A Grade event also with a nice round for this time of the year of +4.
A final round of -3 to a countback was good enough to get into the prizemoney.
Bob McKenzie scored a pair of nearest the pins, and was unable to convert either, but he did birdie the 16th to make up for that.
Next Saturday is the August Monthly Medal.
