Collins all class at Garfield

GARFIELD GOLF

Sam Collins was the undisputed star of the 146 players that turned out for Saturday’s second round of the Cox Cup at the Garfield Golf Club on Saturday.

Playing off a handicap of nine, Collins fired a brilliant round of four-over-par 73, signing off on a nett 64 to win the A Grade event by the wide margin of three shots.

The Cox Cup is a stroke event and four grades were up for decision.

Jim Dimtsas took care of the B Grade event with a handicap beating round of 81/nett 66, whilst Daniel Makepeace won the C Grade event with his round of 85/nett 65.

Greg Hogben was the winner of the D Grade event with his round of 89/nett 66.

A final total of 75 to a countback was the number to feature in the prizemoney.

Kevan McMillan, having a good week, had a nice round of 76/nett 67 to be placed fifth overall, while Andrew Went also had a handicap-beating round of 76/nett 69 to finish in 13th place.

There were some nice rounds put in last Sunday where five of the club’s better golfers all put in great results.

Dean Shannon won the event with a round of 78/nett 40 points, while Dave Lawler finished second with a round of 77/nett 37 points.

Sunday regular Steely Mateariki came in with a with 75/nett 35 points, while Darren Stanton and Nick Gray also had nice rounds of 77/nett 35 and 75/nett 35 points respectively.

The day’s other highlight was a pair of nearest the pins scored by Darren Allen and a pair of birdies on the par threes by Heath Barclay.

The next day, Monday, a field of 71 players attended with the weather being very nice indeed with plenty of winter sunshine around.

Kevan McMillan had the best in for the day getting the A Grade result with 38 points by a countback from Heath Barclay.

Pat McDonagh won the B Grade event with a total of 34 points by a countback from Tony Penney and Les Reynolds.

A final countback round of 32 points was the number needed to finish in the money.

Trevor Thompson scored a pair of birdies on the par threes.

After a wet forecast for Thursday the final field was reduced to just 36 eager competitors after a host of tee time scratchings for a game of single par.

Peter Johnson, with two recent placing performances, came out on top with a round of +2 winning by a countback from Darren Grayson who also scored a pair of birdies on the par threes.

Saturday’s ladies event saw club legend Leesa Matthews starring with a winning round of 72 as well as scoring four nearest the pins.

Well done Tippy Golfer Girl.

This Thursday is a game of stableford while Saturday will be a game of single par.
