Eagles and iron play the key

GARFIELD GOLF

The week got off to a bright and sunny start at Garfield Golf Club on Sunday with Peter McNeish having a day out by finishing second with his 34 points.

No, he didn’t win, but it was how he got to his score which was the impressive part.

Playing off his mark of five, McNeish eagled the par-five 10th and scored three nearest the pins for his round of which he converted just one.

The next day Darren Allen shot 75/nett 40 points to win the A Grade event whilst Tom Fowler also scored 40 points to win the B Grade competition.

The great sunny weather continued on Thursday with a field of 112 lining up for a game of single stableford where a countback round of 31 points was good enough to finish in the money.

The scoring on Thursday was below average, similar to last week.

This time just one golfer, Brett Nowlan, winner of B Grade with his 37 points, was able to play to or better their handicap for the day.

Andrew Went got the job done for A Grade winning by a countback from Frank Hyett with a round of 34 points.

Simon Fay, a new name, won the C Grade event with his round of 35 points.

In line with the below average winning scores, just a total of 12 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with the 9th giving up four of those.

Harry Matthews had a pair of nearest the pins on the 8th and 16th holes.

Saturday’s event, once again played in balmy sunny late autumn weather, was the first of two rounds for the 2025 Four Ball Best Ball Par Championship and attracted a field of 74 pairs.

A final round of +5 was required to finish in the money.

Best in for the day and setting the round-one pace was Howard and Hayden MacDonald with a nice round of +10.

The MacDonald’s were closely followed by David Garnepudi and Naveen Davala on +9 and Daniel Blake and Pat MacDonagh on +8.

Ominously lurking in fourth spot is Greg and Damien Needham on +7.

The ladies played a game of single par where Kerrie Davey finished in front after a nice score of -1 playing of her mark of just 10.

The rainfall for April came in at just 31mm which was way short of last year’s total for April at 121mm and was the driest April for the last six years.

This Saturday is the second and final round of the 4BBB Par Championship.
