Easter Cup time at Garfield

Last Monday it was Masters Monday with the Garfield Golf Club putting on a fantastic gourmet breakfast for everyone to take in the final exciting moments of the US Masters before heading out for a game.

A field of 74 teed off with Trevor Thompson coming out on top for the A Grade event with 38 points.

Deanna Hargreaves, a regular in this column, got the B Grade win with her 37 points by a countback from Desmond Kerr.

The 2025 Easter Cup is currently under way over the four-day weekend with a minimum two rounds per players best scores required to determine the winner.

On Good Friday a field of 48 presented in ideal conditions with a final score of 34 points required to finish in the money.

Nathan Hathaway had the best of it by winning the B Grade event with his 40 points whilst Stephen Barrett won the A Grade event with a great round of 72/nett 39 points.

Peter McNeish had two birdies on the 4th and 13th holes, while other great scores came from Matt Wouters; 73/nett 38 points and Steely Mateariki with 69/nett 36 points.

Saturday’s event attracted a field of 131 punters with a countback round of 32 points needed to finish in the money with four grades up for decision.

Best in for the day and winning the D Grade event was Ron Zomer with his 41 points.

John Curtin won the C Grade event with his 39 points, whilst Darren Mouser shot 74/nett 39 points to win the A Grade event.

Brian Seers won the B Grade event in a three-way countback from Russell Maxwell and Paul Kaye with 38 points.

There were stacks of birdies on the par threes with the course giving up some 24 of those with the 9th giving up 6 and the 13th giving up five.

Thursday’s players had perfect conditions although the overall scoring was down compared to the other days, with a final countback round of 33 points require to finish in the money.

Gail Franklin had the day’s best result with her 38 points getting the job done for the C Grade event, while Grant McKay, breaking a run of outs, won the B Grade event with his 37 points.

Tym Davey, in great touch, got the A Grade win on a countback from Frank Hyett with a round of 35 points.
