Cardinia Waters upset ladder leaders

CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

Both Cardinia Waters’ midweek sides played against Edithvale last Tuesday and the games were as close as you can get in very hot conditions.

The results were one loss and one win, both by a single shot.

Side one travelled to the Bayside club, and after a tense battle came home with a very creditable one shot win.

Given Edithvale were three games in front of Cardinia Waters on the ladder, it was a great effort by the village bowlers.

With champion bowler John Van Vugt absent it was up to Ashley Graham to fill his very large shoes.

Keith Lewis is enjoying a return to form, and his good win led the way to the success.

He played with Dennis Patmore, Bill Hite and Len Judge, and they won 22-13.

Ray Naylor’s rink had a draw, the final score being 20-20.

Ray played with Ian Kennedy, Jill Naylor and Ron Seamer.

This win saw Cardinia Waters side one move one spot up the ladder, just ahead of Mulgrave Country Club.

They appear unable to make the finals in four weeks’ time.

Next Tuesday they are home to Narre Warren who are safely in the four.

Side two were at home also, playing top of the ladder Edithvale side three.

In another tense game which came down to the last bowl of the day, Edithvale won by just a single shot.

Mick Knight’s rink performed best winning easily in the end, aided by a five up on the last end.

He played with Robert Mitchell, Therese Mitchell and Donny Gibson, and their score was 22-12.

Side two are now sitting in third place on the ladder, and play Noble Park at home next Tuesday.

A win here will help the local side keep their finals chances alive.

SATURDAY

Both our Saturday sides played at home this week, and both were successful.

Side one won a heart-stopper against top of the ladder Frankston.

Touted as being possible section winners early in the season, Frankston were beaten by one shot, after holding a comfortable lead at the afternoon tea bell.

Best winning rink was John Moore (skip), Marion Stevens, Donny Gibson and Sandra Wilde.

Leading by three shots at the afternoon tea bell, they powered ahead from then on, boosted by a seven on the seventeenth end.

The final score was 25-12.

Steve Hale (skip), Jim Barrie, Dennis Patmore and Gary Bondfield had to settle with a draw, after leading most of the afternoon.

It all came down to the last end which Frankston won.

Cardinia Waters side one currently holds third place on the ladder.

The teams in top four are Frankston, Parkdale, Cardinia Waters and Mulgrave Country Club.

All four sides have won eight games from eleven played.

Next week Cardinia Waters side one have an away game against Cranbourne, who they defeated easily in round five.

They need this win because the last two games are against teams in the final four.

Side two had a comfortable win against Dandenong Club.

They won on two rinks, with Mick Knight’s rink doing the best.

Their final score was 28-13.

He played with Bill Hite, Ian Kennedy and Paul Mercieca.

They led on all but the first two ends, and were assisted by one end of four, and two threes.

Aided by a seven on the last end and winning overall by ten shots was John Carr’s rink.

He played with Peter Mitchell, Jenny Cole and Therese Mitchell.

Their score was 27-15.

This side has a good hold on top place, with three games to go.

Next week they play Berwick away.

Berwick are just outside the four, and a win here will cement Cardinia Waters side two’s ladder position.
