Tough breaks for Garfield

GARFIELD BOWLS

It was a tough week at the office for Garfield Bowls with only one of the three teams bringing home the win as the Christmas break looms large.

On Tuesday the Midweek Division 4 side played at home against Longwarry.

The three rinks played three tight games between them, but the same direction of the scoring made for an overall very close loss to the home side by a final score of 39 shots to 51.

The team skipped by Gwen Fabris, and consisting of Annette O’Shea, Gordon Moxey and Bob Lamport, struggled all day and finished up eight ends down, losing by 13 shots to 20.

Gerry Fuller’s team, consisting of Cheryl Breteler, Luke Monckton and Trevor Peters, were in the same boat, and also lost by 11 shots to 22.

The team of Lexi Taylor, John O’Shea, and Helene Newton, skipped by Malcolm Newham filled out the threesome, producing a bit better result, losing by 15 shots to 19.

The side remains in fourth position on the ladder despite the result of this loss.

On Saturday the Division 2 Saturday side played host to the side from Traralgon, and despite winning only one of the four ends, lost the day by just four shots, 65 to 69.

The team of Graeme Burton, Bob Lamport, John O’Shea, and skip Shane Oliver were down by three shots before they scored, but after that the game was perfectly level, to the point where they lost the game by that same three-shot margin, losing by 13 shots to 16.

Les Pumphrey, Geoff Pumphrey, Joe Lenders and skip Steve Bassed played topsy-turvy all day, with Garfield down by no more than six at any time and losing by just four, down 16 shots to 20.

The team consisting of Lexi Taylor, Cheryl Breteler, Alan White, and skip Richard Ross were three shots down, then squared it up, then three down, and square again.

Then they pulled the score away from there to finish the game winning by 19 shots to 13; the only winning team for the side.

Stephen Whyte, skipping the team consisting of Luke Monckton, Roger Worden, and Gary Helmore, was the only team which started out in front, and were there till the 16th end, at which point their opponents scored 10 shots on two ends, making the Garfielders seven shots down.

A comeback brought them back to only three shots down, but that’s all they managed, losing by 17 shots to 20 in the end.

The less spoken about the side’s ladder position, the better.

The Division 5 Saturday side, meanwhile, played away at Newborough against the homeless Morwell side.

A good performance by two of the three teams brought home a similarly good winning result by 64 shots to 54.

The team of Wes Goodman, Brad Fowler, Helene Newton and skip, Gwen Fabris, lost the first end by just one shot, but from there were never headed and won easily by 26 shots to 13.

The team skipped by Bian Fox and consisting of Rick Sillett, Henry Breteler and Annette O’Shea, were down badly after seven ends when they were four shots behind.

After that, they made a see-saw and skip, up and down to just one-shot lagging.

From there, though, they zoomed ahead to win the game by 20 shots to 15.

Jasmine O’Shea skipped the team of Trevor Peters, Gordon Moxey and Len Preece.

They started out badly, down by eight shots, before they opened their account.

From there, they brought the score back to one shot up after14 ends, but that was the end of the procession, and they lost in the end by 18 shots to 26.

The three sides in the middle of the ladder continue to be very close; Garfield still sits atop this group after this week’s good result, in fifth place this week.
