Calderara shows his class

GARFIELD GOLF

It was a warm and particularly humid week at Garfield Golf Club with the odd shower floating never far away.

The rainfall count for November was just 62mm, compared to 88mm this time last year, which has all added up to hard and fast fairways leading to huge winning scores coming in.

The play-off for the club’s B Grade Gross champion between Curtis Duffy and Terry Garratt was taken out by Curtis; well done to both gents.

Saturday was Monthly Medal Day which attracted a good size field of 131 punters with a par round of 69 required to finish in the money.

This was achieved by a total of 33 players outside the place getters.

Best in for the day was Bob Calderara with a great round of 75/nett 62, on a countback from Jake Jeffrey.

They were two shots better than Dylan Skinner, Greg Nicholls and the unlucky Peter Johnson whose best round in ages of 81/nett 64 wins him a down the line prize.

Other good rounds were achieved by Steve Kohut Jnr 74/nett 65, Chris Thorn 63/nett 66, Ray James 74/nett 66 and Stephen Barrett 75/nett 68.

Thorn had the day’s best A Grade scratch round of 63, while Calderara won B Grade with his 75, Greg Nicholls 83 for C Grade and Jake Jeffrey 86 for the best D Grade scratch.

Tym Davey scored a pair of nearest the pins for the 8th and 16th holes.

On Thursday a field of 102 presented for play with a countback round of 34 points needed to finish in the money.

Ray James, having a good results week, won the A Grade event with a nice round of 39 points playing off his mark of just eight.

Greg Noonan broke a run of outs to get the B Grade victory with a score of 40 points whilst the 84-year-old veteran Geoff Roberts won the C Grade event, also with 40 points.

Harry Matthews had a good round of 38 points, playing two shots better than his mark of just four. Frank Hyett, Gary Bassett and Trevor Male – all single figure players – each had par rounds of 36 points. A total of 17 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with the fourth and eighth giving up five each of those.

Bernie Clark, a lady golfer coming off outstanding club championship results, won Tuesday’s event with a handicap round of 36 points defeating Karli Van Der Horst by one shot.

Monday, which is becoming more popular as we approach the holiday season, attracted a field of 69 players with a countback round of 34 points needed to finish in the money.

Best in for the day and winning the B Grade event was Daryl OGrady by a countback from Steve O’Loughlin with a score of 38 points.

Mat Van Der Horst had a nice round of 37 points, off his mark of just four, to get the A Grade win in a three-way countback from Ross McKenzie and Trevor Guille.

This Saturday is a game of stableford whilst we take on Mirboo North in the annual club challenge which is to be played on our deck.
