GARFIELD GOLF
It was a very warm and steamy week at Garfield Golf Club with the forecast rain arriving on Saturday ensuring a testing time for golfers out to claim the club’s ultimate prize.
To no one’s surprise, Christopher Thorn stormed to his second-consecutive club champion’s title with a three round gross score of 211; just failing to match last year’s record low number of 208.
Thorn, the lowest amateur golfer to ever grace Garfield’s fairways, dominated all aspects of the 2024 Club Championship.
Clint Williams had a good tournament, finishing second to Thorn, some 11 shots away, whilst Harry Elyasie was a further 10 shots back in third place.
Congratulations must go to one of our best veteran players in Terry Garratt, a multiple club veteran champion, for winning the B Grade gross event by a countback from Curtis Duffy with a three-round total of 248.
However, there will now be a playoff required to determine the overall champion.
John Hoare, also a previous winner, won the C Grade gross championship with a total of 258; two shots to the better of Keith Edwards.
Hoare also made it a great championship by winning the veterans title with a three-round total of 201, three shots to the better of Evan Williams.
Tony Quinn was victorious winning the D Grade gross title defeating Daniel Blake.
The red-hot Paul Govaars, on the back of a three-week winning run, stormed to victory for the A Grade handicap title with a three-round total of 206.
Clint Williams finished runners up again, four shots behind Govaars.
Evan Williams kept his nerve to win the B Grade handicap title by a single shot to Naveen Davala finishing on 204.
Hoare made it the C Grade double, winning by eight shots from John Curtin in second place.
It was likewise for Tony Quinn, winning both D Grade titles, this time the handicap event defeating – once again – Daniel Blake.
The Ladies Saturday Club Championships also was completed on Saturday with Bernie Clark having a great win with a three-round total of 220; three shots in advance of Kim Pellatt.
Clark made it the golden double by also winning Tuesday’s A Grade nett event with a total of 221.
Five shots away was seven-time winner, Leesa Matthews.
Jeanette Mitchell made a successful month even better by winning the B Grade nett title on Tuesday with a three-round total of 215; five shots clear of Daphne Elleman.
Yvonne Barrot is a lady golfer in great touch, this time winning the C Grade nett event with a total of 209 as well as being crowned the Ladies veteran champ with precisely that score.
Kerrie Davey, playing off her low mark of eight, took out the Tuesday Gross title with a score of 242 by a 14-shot margin to Bernie Clark.
A better than average size field of 107 turned out on Thursday with a visitor from Trafalgar, Mark Robinson, having the day’s best result winning the B Grade event with 40 points, whilst Marcus Crossley took out the A Grade event with a nice round of 39 points.
Nick Gaal won the C Grade event with, once again, 39 points.
A final countback score of 34 points was the number needed to finish in the money.
Thursday’s twilight event was taken out by Lonnie Collins with a score of 25 points whilst 100 tickets at $5 each were sold for the huge cash $500 jackpot which was taken out by the recently married Alex Blanck.
This Saturday is the December Monthly Medal.
