MIDWEEK
There were mixed results from our two teams this week, with Side One finding Mulgrave Country Club’s side too good, and Side Two having a satisfactory small win over the same club in division five.
Side one is struggling in division two after its promotion at the end of last season.
They found the big grass green at Mulgrave not to their liking, and went down on all rinks by a total of 30 shots.
They are in second last place, ironically just above Pakenham, who beat them in the Sectional Grand Final last year.
At home, Side Two had a comfortable sixteen shot win.
They picked up all the points, sending them up the ladder into second place behind Berwick.
This week Side Two play away at Edithvale.
Never an easy game at home, Edithvale will provide Cardinia Waters with a benchmark for their season.
Best winning rink against Mulgrave Country Club was skipped by Mick Knight, ably assisted by Jim Barrie, Marie Stephenson and Donny Gibson.
They won by 10 shots up.
Winning by four shots were Steve Hale, Ian Kennedy, Therese Mitchell and Bill Tippelt who won 22-18.
Sneaking home by two shots was John Carr, Stuart Tokely, Michele Bondfield and Peter Mitchell, their scores were 21-19.
SATURDAY
Both sides had good wins over Noble Park last Saturday which resulted in them ending up in top spot on their respective ladders.
Playing at home, Side One won three of the four rinks by a total of seventeen shots.
Keith Lewis’ rink showed the way winning by 26 shots up after leading 18-3 at afternoon tea time.
Keith played with Bill Hite, Jim Barrie and Val Moore.
John Moore had Mick Knight, Dennis Patmore and Ian Kennedy in his rink, and after having a handy lead early, before surrendering it up, they fought hard to grab a five-shot win.
Ray Naylor’s rink had a big fright after leading 22-14 on the eighteenth end.
Their opponents took the game right up to them, but fell by just one shot.
Ray played with Jill Naylor, Cathy Swinkels and Bill Tippelt.
Next week Side One travel to Frankston to play first against second.
Frankston are the new kids on the block, having until this season played in the Mornington Peninsula Competition.
Quite possibly an unknown quantity, it has won its three games, as have Cardinia Waters.
We are three points in front, but Frankston have a better percentage.
This game will surely shape the pointy end of the top four, with Mulgrave and Parkdale looking contenders as well.
Frankston defeated Parkdale last week, only by eight shots.
Playing on the Noble Park grass greens is usually difficult however Cardinia Waters Side Two made short work of the “Parkers”, winning all three rinks.
The forty shots up, and twelve points took Cardinia Waters right up the ladder to the top.
They are three points ahead of Willow Lodge, and this week play another away game against Dandenong Club.
The best winning rink was skipped by Marie Stephenson who played with Stuart Tokely, Paul Mercieca and Ron Seamer, and they won 32-12.
Other winners were Steve Hale, Michele Bondfield, Donny Gibson and Lorraine Devine 31-20.
John Carr, Peter Mitchell, Gary Bondfield and Therese Mitchell also won 24-15.
THURSDAY NIGHT TRIPLES
This popular evening summer game commenced with rather arctic like conditions.
A strong, cold south-westerly wind had the players rugging up.
All seven rinks were full, and winners of the round were George Birnie’s team followed by Jenny Edmond’s team.
