KOOWEERUP BOWLS
Members of the Kooweerup Bowls Club are deep in preparation for the start of the summer season with Pennant practice matches and Friday Triples competitions commencing.
Practice games took place at Blue Hills and Cranbourne RSL Clubs.
Kooweerup’s green and clubhouse are unavailable as yet, meaning the Mornington Peninsula Bowls Region has completed the Pennant draw with Kooweerup playing rounds one to seven away and then hopefully rounds 8 to 14 at home.
Proposed completion date for the new Clubhouse/Community Hub is now mid-November so here’s hoping.
We must also thank Garfield and Lang Lang for allowing us to use their green and facilities for our Friday Triples competition until we can use our own green.
Kooweerup’s first practice game was against Blue Hills with a 1-1 rink draw.
For what it was worth it was a good hit out on a tricky green which is why they are called practice matches.
We introduced two new members, Steven Plumridge and Tracey Hill from Coatesville BC, who both fitted in very well and showed that they will be assets to the club moving forward.
The second practice game was at Cranbourne RSL, with four rinks “pitted” against each other with a 2-2 result in a shortened game played in windy conditions.
It was another good hit out for both clubs with Adrian Wheelan making his debut in Kooweerup colours.
We commenced our Friday Triples competition at Garfield on 20 September, with 14 teams participating with several new players involved in various teams.
Players from Berwick, Garfield, Korumburra, Kooweerup, Lang Lang, Longwarry, Narre Warren and Pakenham all took part.
The winning team was Peter Bott, Paul Currie and Ashley Graham (Pakenham) with 38 points.
Runners up were Luke Monckton, Joe Barlow (Garfield) and Charles Poulsen (Kooweerup) on 33 points.
Best first game was won by Trevor Kitchin, Colin Cousins (Longwarry) and Charles Harris (Pakenham) on 16 points, with best second game going to Jim Jenkins, Helen Ralph (Kooweerup) and Pauline Gray (Lang Lang) on 20 points. Most touches for the start of the season was won by Jim Jenkins (Kooweerup) with eight for the day.
One of our members, Stephen Payne, together with wife Heather, recently played in the National Transplant Bowls tournament in Canberra representing Victoria and Kooweerup which was a major achievement.
Stephen had a double-lung transplant three years ago and has recovered well enough to play bowls again.
Whilst Stephen was toiling away on the bowls green, Heather was trying some of Canberra’s golf courses.
