GARFIELD GOLF

The total rain fall for July was 111mm compared to just 31mm in 2023 and was the most monthly total since we received 121mm in April.

Considering the rain our course has held up remarkably well.

Saturday was Monthly Medal Day at Garfield and was attended by a field of 130 eager golfers.

The day was played in dry and fine conditions with scoring proving to be quite the challenge with a total of just four players able to match or better their handicap for the day.

Ben Balfour was the best in with a round of 82/nett 66, followed in by Curtis Duffy 68, Alistair Hall 68 and Trevor Thompson, who signed for 69.

Matt Young won the A Grade Scratch with a round of 76; Duffy won B Grade Scratch with his round of 82, Hank Adams won C Grade Scratch with his round of 90, while Hall was victorious for the D Grade Scratch with a total of 94.

A final card of nett 74 was the number to finish in the prize money which was achieved by a total of 38 players.

Just nine birdies were scored for the day on the par threes.

Karli Van Der Horst put her name in gold and will go down in history forever more after achieving the club’s first-ever hole in one for a comp round which she achieved on Monday on the new 13th hole. Matt Allen holed out previously on this hole but it wasn’t during a comp round.

A great field of 92 turned out on Thursday with the start being delayed some 45 minutes due to the heavy frost on the greens which eventually cleared into a fine and sunny winter’s day.

The veteran Des Kerr had the day’s best round getting the B Grade win with a great round of 39 points. Trevor Thompson made it double wins for the week, firstly winning Saturday’s handicap event and then turning out on Thursday to get the A Grade win with a round of 37 points as well as scoring a pair of nearest the pins which he duly converted in Monday’s comp.

Nick Gaal broke a long run of outs to achieve the C Grade victory with a handicap round of 36 points.

A final countback round of 33 points was required to feature in the prizemoney which was achieved by some 18 players.

Leo De Jager was the daily star by achieving the three nearest the pins, all on the back nine; however, he failed to convert any of these into birdies.

Harry Elyasie had a great round on Monday winning that day’s comp with a total of 39 points playing off his mark of just six.

This Saturday is a game of single stableford.
