Durran nets medal with magnificent 62

GARFIELD GOLF

A great-sized field of 141 players turned out at Garfield Golf Club on Saturday for the playing of the July Monthly Medal.

A total of 17 players were able to play to or better their handicap for the day, on a course that is unusually dry for this time of year.

The lack of rain in June – there was only 36mm in total compared to 75mm last year – and this month, except for the bitterly cold mornings, has ensured the course is in exceptionally dry condition for early July.

Graeme Durran took home the medal with a great round of 79, nett 62, to win the medal by three shots from Tony Quinn.

Clint Williams fired a very nice round of 70, nett 67, to finish runner up to Chris Davies in the A Grade handicap event.

Chris Thorn also had a great day by winning the A Grade scratch with a round of +4, net 67.

Durran’s round of 79 got the B Grade scratch win while James Wallace won the C Grade scratch with 86 and Gary Tivendale won the D Grade scratch with a total of 91.

There were four eagles scored for the day with history created on the new third hole where both Durran and Clint Williams scored the first ever eagles for that hole.

Thorn eagled the par five 17th and Matt Young did likewise on the par five first.

Just nine birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with the 16th giving up the four of those.

A final score of nett 73 was required to finish in the prize money and was achieved by a total of 41 players.

Yet another strong field of 98 turned up on Thursday for the day’s comp of single stableford and started off in freezing conditions and turned into a fine but overcast day.

Best in for the day and winning the A Grade event was Leo De Jager with a good round of 41 points, while Mick Howsin broke a run of outs to get the B Grade win by a countback from Trevor Burnie with a score of 35 points.

Deanna Hargreaves is a lady in good touch, this time winning the C Grade event with a handicap beating round of 37 points.

A final countback score of 32 points was the number needed to finish in the money.

Ray James scored a pair of nearest the pins on the 8th and 13th holes.

Monday’s comp continues to grow in attendance this time with a field of 61 turning out for a game where once again a score of 32 points to a countback was required to go down the line.

Marcus Crossley returned to the winners list after a period of outs to get the A Grade win by a countback from Harry Elyasie with a round of 38 points.

Ron Parsons got the B Grade victory with a less than impressive total of 34 points.

Next Saturday is a stroke event, the second round of the Cox Cup.
