UNDER 12: Pumas (0) v Berwick (10)
Pakenham took on cross-freeway rivals Berwick in the sunshine Saturday morning. Pakenham made some good defensive plays but not enough to stop Berwick from hitting the scoreboard. The chill in the air and the dominant pitching from Berwick kept the Pakenham bats quiet.
UNDER 14: Frankston-Pakenham (7) v Dingley (4)
Aiden started on the mound, throwing some great pitches to Dane behind the plate. The team backed up the pitchers with some really good defensive infield plays. Everyone had their wheels on, running the bases and driving runs in. Harvey came in to close – his first-time pitching – and ended the game with two strikeouts. Well done, Harvey! Another great game team and a well-deserved win.
UNDER 16: Frankston (8) v Pumas (2)
Pumas took on Frankston Red again for the second time this week; facing there strongest pitching line up and again we were solid in defense but just fell short offensively and not tying the hits together. It’s great to see the kids improving consistently and coming together as a team as we approach the finals series. Frankston got the win this time but we are building confidence that we can come out on top when it matters most.
SENIORS
A1: Frankston (2) v Pumas (6)
Pakenham A Grade traveled to Frankston. The team showed really good discipline at the plate and scored six runs in the game. Luke Anson threw a great game with five scoreless innings and the team played strong defense behind him. The combined effort led to a 6-2 victory over Frankston.
A2: Frankston (5) v Pumas (0)
Pumas travelled to Frankston on a Saturday looking for a response after a couple of rough outings in recent times. With Joel Anson on the mound we were provided with a fantastic opportunity, staying in the game up until the sixth inning when a two-out bases loaded double to Frankston broke the game open. Not enough pressure was put on the Frankston starting pitcher throughout the game and this was the sole reason we were unable to get a much-needed victory.
C1: Bonbeach (4) v Pakenham (6)
Pumas took on Bonbeach and scored three in the opening inning after a single to Ray Pal a double to Luke Billing and a line-drive double to Michael Elijah. Defensively Tim Stockdale took to the hill and despite an early single, and some quick running, kept the home side to one run after ground balls to each infielder. No-one troubled the scorers in the Puma second but with two out and two on, the Braves looked to score on a long single to left, only for Jason Rossit to nail the runner at home plate and end the inning. Ray and Luke both singled in the third and when the pitcher tried to pick off Michael Elijah at first, an errand throw made sure we had added two to the tally, taking it to 5-1. A single and a hit by pitch saw the Pumas in trouble, a grounder to second narrowly missed a double play, but the lead runner out left runners at the corners. A grounder back to Tim saw a runner score, but a second out via first base. Then a massive long ball cleared the fence to score two runs and the lead was back to one run. A ground out back to Tim kept the Pumas ahead. Three quicks outs saw us back in the field and eager to maintain our lead. Brad Jones came on to pitch. A ground out to first, a fly to second and a pop up to short saw the inning end on five pitches. Ray Pal singled again, but with two outs it looked bleak. Jason Rossit was happy to maintain a lead and hit a long double to score Ray and give us breathing space. 6-4 into the last and things looked good with one out and a runner on first. A ground ball to the pitcher looked like a certain double play until the runner took out Ray Pal, injuring his knee, and leaving us with eight fielders and two outs. A single didn’t bring in any runs, and Brad dug deep to strike out the next hitter ending the game there. An anxious wait to see how Ray goes with his knee but a strong effort shown by the Pumas. Hits: Ray Pal 3, Luke Billing 2, Jason Rossit, Michael Elijah.
C2: Bonbeach (2) v Pakenham (16)
Pumas played Bonbeach at Bonbeach and got on the board in the top of the first inning after Will Mayberry singled and Travis Hough grounded out, each scoring one run. The Pumas then scored seven runs on six hits in the top of the second inning when Scott Dale singled, scoring two runs, Travis Hough singled, scoring one run, before Kyle Peck hit a massive double, scoring the seventh run and ending the inning. Pumas’ bats then went quiet before Juniior Simaika woke them up crushing a 401-foot line drive to centre field. Unfortunately, the Bonbeach centre field fence is 403 feet so Junior had to run four bases for his inside the park home run, scoring three runs. Back to the Gym Junior. The Pumas finished the innings putting up seven runs in total. The Pumas batters tallied 12 hits in the game. Junior Simaika drove the middle of the lineup, leading Pakenham with three runs batted in. The infielder went two-for-four on the day. Greg McCormick continued his outstanding season for the Pumas with three hits in five at bats from the leadoff position. Connor Mills Emmerson and Kyle Peck each collected multiple hits for Pakenham Pumas C2. Pakenham Pumas ran wild stealing 16 bases in the game. Scott Dale pitched for the Pumas, surrendering five hits and two runs over six innings while walking none.
D WHITE: Frankston (10) v Pumas (15)
Pumas jumped back into the winner’s column this week with a disciplined performance against Frankston Tomatoes. Patience paid off for the Pumas in the first inning with a Hit By Pitch, four walks and hits from newcomer Malachite (scoring his brother Jude) and Tyler totaling five runs. Unfortunately, we struggled with pitching in the first, allowing Frankston to answer with the maximum seven. The Pumas kept their head up and continued their disciplined approach to pull two runs back and tie the game with Azariel picking up an RBI with an infield single. James Kinsella came on as relief pitcher in the second inning with Garreth taking over catching duties behind the dish allowing just the one run to score. In the third inning the Pumas sent 11 batters to the plate to score another five runs for a three-run lead. In response Frankston could only manage the one run heading into what would be the final inning with only 20 minutes remaining. Frankston brought on a new pitcher but Puma’s plated another three runs; eating up time so the Tomatoes could only manage one run before Time and Game was called. It was a disciplined approach at the plate from the Puma’s taking walks when they needed to but also being ready to pounce on the right pitches. D BLACK: Pumas (4) v Berwick (14)
Pumas Black hosted Berwick for the first time and the game started off as a tight pitcher’s game. Both teams struggled to convert baserunners for the first two innings, with Berwick gaining the slight lead, scoring one run after a wild pitch. Berwick hit away in the third, peppering the outfield and continuing to find gaps, despite Anthony’s great work on the mound. Two strike outs and a third base to short stop put out, ended the innings but the damage was done. Berwick’s starting pitcher was too good this day, with an impressive 10 strikeouts, while giving up only two hits, four walks and one run off a wild pitch. We changed pitchers in the fifth but we couldn’t stem the flow of runs, before a great catch from catcher Angus finally brought the dig to an end. A change of pitcher for Berwick offered a few more opportunities, but it was too little too late unfortunately. Hits: Anthony Clissold (2), Jon Ellis, Luke Gutierrez and Gregg Clutterbuck.
WOMENS: Pumas (3) v Dingley (15)
Pumas played Dingley on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Pakenham. Starting Pitcher Olivia Garcia battled on the mound for the Pumas, giving Dingley the opportunity to score seven runs and bring Pakenham up to bat. Dingley swiftly got the outs, preventing the Pumas from scoring. Pakenham came out strong in the second inning and got the outs at the bases, stopping Dingley from scoring too many more runs. Our ladies picking the pace of Dingley’s pitcher Ina and managed to score three runs themselves. Pakenham fought hard with high spirits, but just couldn’t get on top. Hits: Felicity, Jessica, Courtney, Gedea, and Angel.
