Teamwork the talk at Garfield

GARFIELD GOLF

After a couple of weeks of dry and warm weather the course at Garfield has really dried out with the weekend extreme heat adding to the firm fairways in play.

Saturday was the club’s foursome’s championship with a field of 56 pairs challenging themselves in the extreme heat.

Winning the scratch event and getting the title were Paul Govaars and Grant McLure with a fine round of 64.5.

Winning the handicap ‘King Trophy’ was David Werner and Darren Manley with a score of nett 60, from runners up Brenton Hollingworth and Steely Mateariki on 65.5.

A final score of 71.5 was required to feature in the prizes.

Last Monday a decent field of 72 turned out with Harry Matthews, having a great week of form, winning the A Grade event by a countback over Heath Barclay with a score of 37 points.

Anthony Penney, also by a countback over Terry Bull, got the B Grade win with the day’s best round of 40 points.

Heath Barclay had a pair of nearest the pins whilst Dek Bell scored himself a pair of birdies.

A final score of 34 points to a countback was the number to finish in the money.

Thursday’s comp attracted a field of 106 punters playing in ideal sunny conditions.

A couple of brilliant rounds came in with firstly Russ Loughridge getting the A Grade win with a round of 41 points, which came off the back of a one over 70 off the stick.

Harry Matthews made it a solid week of golf by finishing runner up to Loughridge with a fine score of one under off the stick to tally up a score of 40 points.

Harry Thomas won the B Grade event with a round of 41 points, a popular winning score, whilst Graeme Martin broke a long run of outs to shoot 88/64 nett to get the C Grade victory with…you guessed it…41 points!

A handicap round of 36 points to a countback was required to finish in the money.

Loughridge scored an eagle-three on the first hole, whilst Matthews did the same on the tenth.

Just the 10 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes.

Tina Cowie is the in-form lady golfer at the moment, this time winning Saturday’s stableford event with an excellent round of 39 points.

This Saturday is the Anniversary Mixed Fourball Aggregate event played in conjunction with a single stableford event.
