CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS
Cardinia Waters was full of smiles this week celebrating wins by all three Pennant bowling sides.
Midweek Pennant
Side one had a superb win over Berwick, winning on all three rinks and overall, by 24 shots.
Ray Naylor’s rink was the best on the day.
Starting slowly and down at the lunch break, they picked up the bit, and waltzed home winning easily by nine shots.
Their last four ends added 14 shots that helped them on their way.
Ray played with John Moore, Dennis Patmore and Ian Kennedy.
Jim Barrie’s rink also recorded a handy win of eight shots.
By lunch they had put their noses in front, and after the break were never headed.
Jim played with Len Judge, Dennis Stephenson and John Carr.
John Van Vugt’s rink led all day over determined Berwick opponents, and were relieved to score a 26-20 win after 21 ends.
John played with Del Dance, Robert Mitchell and Jill Naylor.
This week Cardinia Waters side one plays a home game against Carrum.
Last time these two teams met Cardinia Waters won by 22 shots at Carrum.
Cardinia Waters are comfortably in second place on the ladder, and only disaster could stop them playing finals.
In contrast Side two made heavy work of its game at Narre Warren.
They won on just the one rink, but the margin was great enough to win the day and stay in touch with the top four.
Winning easily was Stuart Tokely’s rink.
The end score was 25-7 which included one end by five shots, a four, and four ends by four shots.
They held their opponents to just seven singles.
Stuart was supported by Gary Bondfield, Peter Mitchell and Lorraine Devine.
Side two currently hold down fourth spot on the ladder over Mulgrave Country Club by nine points and a hefty shot difference.
This week they play Dandenong Club away, and will be looking for a good win to help secure a finals berth.
Saturday Pennant
Cardinia Waters Saturday side is on a roll.
Following their big win last week against Narre Warren they repeated the dose on top-of-the table Churchill Waverley Golf this week.
They also created history this season by winning on all four rinks.
Their resurgence has thrust them up the ladder where they jointly hold down fifth spot with Narre Warren.
A far cry from languishing on the bottom as they were before the Christmas break.
Best winning rink this week was John Moore, Steve Hale, Marion Steven’s and Peter Mitchell.
They led all day, and extended their lead after the tea break to a handy 30-8 victory.
Jim Barrie’s rink was pleased to record a comfortable win too.
They started well, but their opponents had caught up by afternoon tea.
After the break they powered away to score a 13-shot win.
To do this they scored 14 shots in the last seven ends.
Jim played with Marie Stephenson, Dennis Patmore and Donny Gibson.
Next best was Ray Naylor’s rink.
After 17 ends the scores were level, however winning three of the last four ends was enough to grab a three-shot win.
Ray played with Bryan Steven’s, Jill Naylor and Ian Kennedy.
Despite leading all day, John Van Vugt’s rink had to stave off a defiant effort by their opponents to claim a one-shot victory.
With scores level and one end to play, it took a special bowl by Del Dance to seal the win.
This side now has an away game next Saturday against Berwick, who are on the bottom of the ladder.
Following that is home game against Noble Park, then an away game against Ferntree Gully.
Whilst they are not expecting to play finals, there could be a very slim chance of doing so.
Equally, there is a slim chance of plummeting down into wooden-spoon territory.
Now, the ladder shows Ferntree Gully back on top after beating Narre Warren.
Churchill Waverley Golf is second with Cranbourne and Noble Park rounding off the top four.
The latter three teams all lost this week.
