Typhoon Tym shoots 66

GARFIELD GOLF

You may recall that the experts at the Bureau of Meteorology predicted an El Nino weather effect for the summer; leading to hotter and dryer conditions.

Just how wrong can they have been when we have had the wettest start to the year on record?

A total of 100mm was tipped from the gauge last Tuesday after a two-day deluge caused course closure on Monday and Tuesday.

Venturing out to the course for a game on Thursday the conditions were perfect proving the drainage at Garfield is working just fine.

Last Sunday, just before the downpour, the Garfield Plate was played in a Four-Ball Stableford event format, which attracted a field of 24 teams of four players.

Courtesy of a brilliant round of three-under par 66 off the stick by Tym Davey, with the help of Grant McLure, Ross Mitchell and Greg Wasmund, the home side’s total of 103 was just enough to get the victory.

Finishing second, just one point away, were Adam West, David Byers, Craig Waring and Leigh Anderson representing Churchill /Monash Golf Club.

Glenn Flowers from Drouin won the A Grade handicap event with a score of 37 points, while Brett Langmaid from Moe won the B Grade event with a score of 39 points.

Mark Jackson from Trafalgar got the C Grade victory via a countback with a round of 35 points.

Davey’s great scratch round of 66 won him the overall gross award.

A final score of 32 points down to a countback was good enough to finish in the money.

On Saturday a field of 148 turned out for a game of single stableford with a final countback score of 33 points required to finish in the money.

Allan Milkins had the day’s best result getting the B Grade win with a very nice total of 43 points.

Sam Collins did best for the A Graders with a winning score of 42 points.

Damien Martini won the C Grade event, also with a score of 42 points, whilst Jake Jeffrey won the D Grade event with a final score of 40 points.

Craig Hobson had a nice round of 38 points, playing off just his mark of eight, whilst Stephen Murray, last week’s medal winner, playing off the same mark, had a round of 37 points.

A total of 17 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with the fourth giving up five of those. Dave Lawler had the two nearest the pins on the 13th and 16th…he was able to covert one of those into a birdie.

On Thursday there was yet another good turn out by some 115 players with a countback round of 33 points required to finish in the money.

Nick Gray had a great round, with the A Grade winning score of 40 points, playing off his mark of just seven, which was the same winning score by Nick Hoghton to win the B Grade event.

Daryl O’Grady won the C Grade event by a countback with a score of 37 points.

Just the 11 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes.

This Saturday is the Annual Club challenge against Drouin to be played at their course.
