GARFIELD GOLF

It was a fantastic golfing week, weather wise – or for whatever your choice of outdoor activity me be – as we head into a much-anticipated Christmas break.

Garfield players travelled to Mirboo North on Saturday to contest the annual ‘Club Challenge’ in pursuit of the famous ‘Jabba Jabba Shield’.

The travelling Garfield side went down to Mirboo North, who scored an average stableford round of 31 points to Garfield’s 29.

Last Sunday week was the playing of the annual ‘David Bull Mixed American’ event and was contested by a field of eight pairs.

Garfield Club Champions Chris Thorn and Kerrie Davey won by a countback from Ian and Jenny Fleming, visitors from Traralgon, with a final score of 68.12.

For those not travelling to Mirboo, and staying back at the club, it was a game of single stableford which attracted another great size field of 136 players.

Best in for the day and getting the C Grade win was Martin Spurway with a round of 41 points, which was two points clear of Harry Huyskens in the runners-up stall.

On the back of some recent good form, Matt Van Der Horst had the A Grade win with a score of 39 points, two points clear of Clint Williams.

Craig Hunter broke a run of outs to win the B Grade event by a countback score of 38 points over Russell Maxwell.

Stephen Pimm won the D Grade event with a final score of 40 points, with a healthy margin of five points back to Ron Griffett in second place.

A final score of 33 points down to a countback was required to finish in the money which was achieved by some 39 players.

Some 19 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with the brand-new 13th giving up just the two of those.

The 16th proved to be the most popular hole, giving up five birdies.

Chris Thorn added to his week of achievements by scoring an eagle on the par-four fifth hole.

On Thursday, another great field for a working day, 108 players enjoyed the fine weather for a stableford competition.

Robert Harley, getting to be a familiar name, had the day’s best round of 41 points to get the B Grade win by the three points from Trevor Thompson.

Harley also won last Monday week’s event with a brilliant round of 44 points to cap off a great run of form.

Colin Crowle won the A Grade event by a countback from Greg Macklin with a score of 36 points.

Dale Evans, a new name, won the C Grade event with a score of 39 points, defeating Paul Keysers by a solitary point.

A final score of 33 points back to a countback was the number to finish in the money which was achieved by 22 players.

David Pateman scored a pair of nearest the pins on the 13th and 16th holes, but was unable to covert either into birdies.

Ash Graham provided the entertainment for the day; busting his $15 putter in two on the seventh hole and proceeding to use his ‘3-hybrid’ for that purpose.

Graham showed a ton of guts to finish with a score of 33 points, which included three wiped holes even with the pressure applied by his team mates.
