Kerrie Davey takes home the title

GARFIELD GOLF

The weather was the big winner at Garfield Golf Club on Saturday with unrelenting rain causing the competition round to be cancelled.

Tuesday saw the completion of the 2023 Ladies Club Championships with Kerrie Davey taking the title from the consistent Bernie Clark.

Kay Jones was the B Grade scratch champion.

On Thursday a good size field of 85 lined up for play with Jack Henning the star getting the A Grade win with a round of 72 (nett 41 points) playing off his mark of just eight; two points clear of Harry Matthews and Darren Grayson.

Ron Parsons took out the B Grade event with a score of 39 points to defeat Peter Scott by one point.

A final score of 34 points down to a countback was required to finish in the money which was achieved by some 17 players.

Congratulations to the team of four, led by Garfield’s most inform player in Ian Hopper, plus Harry Elyasie, Grant McLure and Jarrod Zonneveld who took out the Moe Plate with a score of 112 points.

A field of 62 players turned out on Monday with Mark Redley getting the win with a round of 40 points whilst Darren Grayson won the A Grade event with a score of 39 points.

For more than 10 years now, Garfield has enjoyed great success with a member’s-only event it refers to as the Top Gun.

After an initial qualifying period, 19 players contest the final which is an exciting day of camaraderie, not just for the players but also for the members that choose to view the contest.

Play for the final involves all 19 players hitting off the first tee in one group.

It is played as a stableford event with one player eliminated for each hole.

Ties are decided by a group chip off from, at times, difficult locations.

Ultimately the two players survive this process to be standing on the 18th tee, ready to go head-to-head up the last to decide the 2024 Champion.

The qualifying period will run from 2 December 2023 until 17 February 2024 at a cost of just $15 per entry which is to be paid in full before play.

Match Committee will convert eligible rounds to stableford points and use a countback system to decide the final field of 19 players which is to be played on 24 February at a pm tee time.
