CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

MIDWEEK REPORT

Cardinia Waters had a mixed day with one win and one loss recorded from two games played last Tuesday.

Side one travelled to Willow Lodge, a small bowling club in a retirement village just south of Dandenong.

They play on a nice eight-rink synthetic green under a large roof.

Willow Lodge was winless before this game, and duly broke the ice at Cardinia Waters side one’s expense.

The two teams were close early, Willow Lodge getting the better start, but with Cardinia Waters coming back just before lunch.

This was due mainly to a fine six shots up on one end by Jim Barrie’s rink.

After lunch there was a ‘ding-dong’ battle between the two sides, and Cardinia Waters got within two shots of the home side before capitulating over the last few ends.

Cardinia Waters had one rink that did well, winning by nine shots.

They were a couple behind at lunch, but powered away in the last half for a 23-14 score line.

Winning seven of the last eight ends helped them on their way.

Ray Naylor was skip, and he played with John Moore, Dennis Patmore and Paul Brindle.

Prior to this game Cardinia Waters side one was on top of the ladder, but has now been relegated to second place behind new leader Pakenham.

The top four teams all have won four games from six played, Pakenham is on 64 points, Cardinia Waters 60, and Cranbourne and Noble Park both on 58 points.

Next week side one plays Cranbourne at home, in the last game of the first round.

Side two played Mt Waverley at home on Tuesday, and won comfortably, although one rink suffered a one-shot loss.

Mt Waverley is a new addition to section seven, division five in the Metropolitan competition, and for most players it was the first time on the Cardinia Waters green.

Steve Hale skipped the best winning rink scoring a runaway fourteen shot victory.

He played with Jenny Edmonds, Peter Mitchell and Lorraine Devine.

They grabbed the ascendancy with a handy five shots up on end nine, and then romped away in the last half with the final score 26-12.

Stuart Tokely got back in the winner’s circle with a nine-shot victory.

Again, it was the second half of the game when they did the most damage.

They grabbed a four up and a five up on the way home for a 23-14 victory.

He played with Del Dance, Therese Mitchell and Gary Bondfield.

Side two is equal second with Narre Warren on 60 points, with Pakenham on top one game ahead.

Fourth team is Mt Waverley a game behind.

Next week side two do battle with Pakenham under the Lion’s dome.

No doubt, this will be a hotly contested game with the usual bragging rights up for grabs.

SATURDAY PENNANT

The weather impacted on a large number of Saturday Pennant games across the south and east of Victoria on the weekend.

Cardinia Waters was set down to play top-of-the-table Ferntree Gully at home, and after managing to start the game it was eventually abandoned.

Both teams got to share the eighteen points that were available.

In the division four, section eight that Cardinia Waters play, there was only one result from the scheduled four games.

The rest were washed out.

In the game completed, Narre Warren defeated Berwick.

Berwick received just two points for a rink win, and Narre Warren received the other sixteen points sending them to first position on the ladder.

Because insufficient ends were played to declare a result, Cardinia Waters shared the eighteen points with Ferntree Gully.

Those points took the village team to within one point of sixth place Berwick.

This week Cardinia Waters play away to Upwey-Tecoma in the first game of the second half of the season.

Upwey-Tecoma is on the bottom with just one win from seven games.
