Midweek Pennant
Cardinia Waters had a win and a loss last Tuesday, with the away side winning and the home side losing by a slim margin.
Side one travelled to Carrum, a club they haven’t played against for some years.
Carrum bowls club is nestled in between the Nepean Highway and Port Phillip Bay.
The pleasant surrounding hides a playing surface that is renowned for being wind affected.
Last Tuesday was one of those days, with the bayside of the green being much wider than the Highway side.
After a tardy start Cardinia Waters took control of the game, and were in front when the lunch bell rang.
Two rinks were well in control, and only Ray Naylor’s rink was having a battle for control.
John Van Vugt’s rink was the best winner…he played with Del Dance, Terry Nye and Ian Kennedy.
They mastered the conditions well, and after briefly being headed, swept ahead winning twelve of the last thirteen ends to score a 31-12 victory.
Beside them, Jim Barrie’s rink was in command as well.
Winning fourteen ends they finished with a score of 28-16.
Jim played with Dennis Patmore, Marion Stevens and Cathy Swinkels.
Side one sits in second position on the ladder, and next week play at home to Keysborough, who are one game behind them on the table.
Side two was undefeated until this week, and lost a close encounter against the Dandenong Club at home.
They won one rink, losing the other two, and went under by just three shots.
They still managed to hold onto second spot on the ladder, but only by percentage now from Narre Warren.
The winning rink was Steve Hale (skip), Jenny Edmonds, Graeme Taylor and Gary Bondfield and their score was 25-17.
Next week side two is away to Mulgrave Country Club.
Saturday Pennant
Berwick visited Cardinia Waters last Saturday, and a great game of bowls was displayed to our spectators.
Prior to today these two teams were separated only by percentage, and a close game was expected…and that was the way the day panned out.
Berwick got an early jump on Cardinia Waters, and led initially.
The villagers steadied a bit, but by afternoon tea were twelve shots in arrears.
Later in the afternoon, after Berwick had dominated the game, Cardinia Waters mounted a comeback and despite losing badly on two rinks got within five shots of Berwick after 84 ends.
Best winning rink was John Van Vugt, playing with Del Dance, Terry Nye and Ian Kennedy.
Their 28-14 score line was the reason Cardinia Waters stayed in the game.
Also winning by three shots was the rink of Jim Barrie, Dennis Patmore, Steve Hale and John Carr.
This loss has left Cardinia Waters in seventh position on the ladder.
However, they are only a game and percentage behind the teams in the four.
Narre Warren is on top, having only had one loss, ironically against Cardinia Waters.
Next week the village team play away at Noble Park.
The “Parkers” are only just above Cardinia Waters, and a win here will move them up the ladder.
