Gerry drops jaws at Garfield

GARFIELD GOLF

The dams are at 100-percent capacity; birdlife is plentiful; and the course – after a great spring with plenty of rain and sunshine – is in peak condition for Garfield’s 2023 Club Championships which begin next week.

All this adds up to plenty of ball run and carry which was the case on Saturday with a field of 126 players out to test their skills.

A total of 34 players, the most in a long time, were able to play to or better their handicap with a final score of 35 points required to finish in the money.

Gerry Van Den Essen was the day’s star with the week’s best result, compiling a huge 45 points to win the D Grade event, six points clear of Steve Kohut Snr.

Tim Sallai returned to the winner’s list getting the A Grade win with a score of 39 points, one point to the better of Kevan McMillan and Ryan Stark.

Craig Metcalf had a nice round of 42 points winning the B Grade event by some two points from Dave Williams and Jim Accettura.

Darren McKerrow got the C Grade victory with a score of 41 points; two points clear of Peter Kelly in the runners up stall.

A better than average total of 18 birdies were scored on the par threes with the 14th giving up six of those.

Gavin De Jager was the other contender for player of the week by getting the Monday win with a great round of 43 points; four points in advance of Gary Kelly.

Jennifer Sullivan, a new name, had a good result on Tuesday playing off her mark of 12 to get the win with a better than handicap result of 37 points, which also included two nearest the pins.

On Thursday, yet another fine day, a field of 89 – which is now becoming the norm – turned out with Greg Macklin returning to the winner’s list with a nice A Grade winning score of 41 points.

Playing off his mark of 12 he was one point better than Chris Davies whom had a great round of 74 off the stick, playing some four shots better than his handicap.

Paul Kaye got it all together by winning the B Grade event with a round of 40 points, one shot to the better of Ash Graham and Harry Huyskens.

Geoff Clingin had the C Grade win with a score of 39 points, one shot in advance of a very much in-form player in Stephen Bird.

Some 25 players were able to play to or better their handicap for the day with the final score of 36 points required to finish in the money.

Just four birdies were scored for the day on the par threes which is a surprise with the tee markers on the ninth being some 20 meters towards the front.

Nathan Hathaway was the victor in Thursday’s twilight event with a huge 25 points, one point in advance of the very unlucky Grant McKay whom played some six shots better than his mark of 14 for his score of 24 points.

The club has sent out to all members – via a generic email – all the details for the club championships commencing next week so if you haven’t received it contact the club.
