GARFIELD BOWLS

The second week of pennant, the first with all three sides playing, was dominated by the Saturday sides’ clean sweep.

The Midweek Division 3 side went to visit Morwell Bowls Club under their roof.

The home side handled their green better than Garfield, who ran out loser by 58 shots to 72.

Helene Newton’s team, consisting of Damian Brick, Steve Hyam and Gordon Moxey, were overrun by a much stronger opposition; they trailed all day and lost by 16 shots to 29.

Keith Sainsbery, Cheryl Breteler, Malcolm Newham and skip Gwen Fabris were 9-3 up before their opponents started to roll, but roll they did.

After levelling the score at 15 shots all, they went on to inflict a defeat on the Garfielders by 22 shots to 30.

The team of Margaret Hyam, Luke Monckton, Bob Lamport and skip Lexi Taylor, were the exception to the rule.

They had a one-for-one struggle early and the score was four shots each after six ends.

Then they started to pull away, finishing with a very good win by 20 shots to 13.

A less than pleasant start for the Tuesdayers, but there’s plenty of time to catch up.

The Division 2 side stayed home on Saturday to play host to Thorpdale.

With some very close games, they nevertheless won all rinks to end the day winning by 87 shots to 62.

The team of Gordon Moxey, Henry Breteler, Joe Lenders and skip Richard Ross started like a train and were 14-6 up halfway through the game.

Then their opponents got their engine going and began a recovery, but the Garfielders were able to hold them off, winning the game by 19 shots to 17.

Tom Cleary skipped the team consisting of Alan Wilson, Ron Saunders and Alan White.

Slow out of the boxes, the Garfielders were down by three shots to nine after seven ends; but seven shots in two ends saw them take the lead, and a close tussle thereafter produced a 22 to 20 win.

Gerry Wakefield, Bob Lamport, Gary Helmore and skipper Shane Oliver scored the first seven shots of the day, and went on from there to a convincing win by 27 shots to 12.

The team of Bob Clarke, Les Pumphrey, Nick Henwood and skip Steve Bassed, lost the first two ends, but then they only allowed their opposition to score in eight of the remaining ends, to win by 19 shots to 13.

This good win has lifted them up to fourth on the ladder.

The Division 5 side visited the halfway side at Trafalgar, and with two good wins and a single-shot loss, the Garfielders came away to win by 68 shots to 34.

The team of Frank Prins, Rick Sillett, Damian Brick and skip Brian Fox, played a game of catch-up all day.

Their opponents got out to a lead and the Garfielders caught up; the again and again, till, with one end to go, the scores were tied.

Unfortunately, the cycle started to repeat again, and they lost on the last end by the smallest margin, 17 shots to 18.

Helene Newton skipped the team of Margaret Hyam, Keith Cooke and Luke Moncton.

They played the same game but in reverse; they got in front and their opponents caught up and so on.

But they had the final say, winning in the end by 16 shots to 11.

The girl-power team skipped by Gwen Fabris and consisting of Jan Moxey, Cheryl Breteler and Lexi Taylor, lost one shot on the first end; then again on the 8th, 12th , 13th and 18th ends.

But that was all…just five shots!

On the remaining ends, they scored at will to end up with a landslide win by 35 shots to 5.

Two good wins sees the side second on the ladder to their neighbors, Longwarry.
